Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. BEAT, a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, and a resident of Cicero, Cook County, and

State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf Clubs, of which the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to golf clubs, and its principal object is to increase the eiiciency of golf clubs. The invention is in the nature of an improvement upon the golf clu'b shown and described in an application for patent filed by me in the United States Patent Cflice on J une 10, 1922 under Serial No. 567,254. In order to give more perfect balance to the club, I find that it is necessary to increase the weight of the metal sole plate at the driving face side. The use of an aluminum plate on the sole is advantageous because it protects the. sole against bruises, but its weight, being practically the same as that of Wood, I find that other means are required to give the necessary balancing weight at the end of the plate adjacent the driving face of the club. I have accomplished this end by making the plate of composite metals, the greater part comprising aluminum and the edge portion, at the driving face of the club, comprising brass or other comparatively heavy metal, joined to the aluminum plate to form to all intents and purposes, a single piece. With these ends in view, the invention consists in a golf club having a sole plate secured on the sole of its head, comprised, in part, of aluminum, and in part of brass or other comparatively heavy metal located at the driving face side of the head. The invention further consists in the several novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a golf club head and fragment of its shaft; Fig. 2 is a View looking at the bottom or sole of the head; Fig. 3 is a plan of the sole plate; Fig. 4 is an edge view thereof, looking in the direction of the arrow 4 in Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.

Referring to said drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of the invention, the reference character 6 designates the head and 7 a fragment of the shaft of a w driver golf club of usual and well known form. Its driving face is designated by the reference character 8 and its sole by the reference character 9. As in the golf club 0f my prior application, above referred to, an aluminum sole plate 10 is let into the sole portion flush with the surface thereof, and as a preference, said sole plate is given the shape shown in the drawings, although it is to be understood, it is not limited to such shape. The sole plate is secured to the head by screws 11 which pass through screw holes 17 in the sole plate. At the driving face end of the sole plate, it is rabbeted out at 12 to leave a thin portion 13, and the rabbet or out out part is filled with a block or strip of brass or other comparatively heavy metal 14, which is rigidly secured to the plate. The two are secured together by forming the thin part of the plate with countersunk holes 15, and forming the brass strip with headed lugs 16 which extend through the holes 15. The lugs may be formed in casting the strip upon the plate.

The sole plate forming the subject matter of this application, may be used in conjunction with the weights and weight carriers 18 disclosed in my said former application. By forming the sole plate of light metal throughout its major portion, and increasino' its weight at the driving face end, the head is protected against bruises on its sole, and the lower edge of its driving face is further protected by the stronger and heavier metal strip, whichalso gives the club the necessary weight at that point to properly balance the club.

More or less variation of the exact details of construction is possible without departing from the spirit of this invention; I desire, therefore, not to limit myself to the exact form of the construction shown and described, but intend, in the following claims., to point out all of the invention disclosed herein.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
