COMBINED LEASE AND WHIP.

Be it known that I, A-noLPH Born, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Combined Leash and Whip, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in restraining devices, and it pertains more particularly to a combined whip and leash for animals, such as dogs, and the like.

It is one of the primary objects in the invention to provide an article of the above type which may be used either as a leash or a whip.

It is a further object of the invention to construct the body portion of the device in such a manner that it will have sufficient rigidity when used as a whip and yet such rigidity of the body portion will not interfere with the successful use of the device as a leash.

It is a further object of the invention to construct the device in such a manner that a loop is formed at one end to provide a handle which also may be reduced in size for the purpose of securing it to a projection, such as a door knob, hook, or the like.

WVith the above and other objects in View, reference is had to the accompanying draw.- ings, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an article constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises a stiffened body portion 5. In forming the device a strap of leather or other suitable material is provided on one of its ends with a loop 6. which loop is formed by folding the end backwardly over the body portion. This loop is adapted to carry a swivel 7, and connected to the swivel 7. by means of an eye 8, is a catch or clip 9, which latter is of the usual construction employed in restraining devices. The strap is then folded intermediate of its ends, as designated by the reference character 10, and the portion 11 thereof is laid parallel to and in contact with the other member 12 of the strap.

placed a stiffening element 13, preferably formed of metal. such metal possessing a certain amount of resiliency in order to give body to the two members 11 and 12. As indicated by the reference character 13, these two members 11 and 12 are stitched together throughout the length of the stiffening member 13, thus forming a relatively rigid body portion between the ends of the device.

By such a construction, a loop is formed on one end of the leash, said loop being designated by the reference character A, and for the purpose of contracting the loop, a sliding member 15 is employed, which sliding member is preferably formed from the same material as the leash. p

In stitching the members 11 and 12 to gether, the member 11 is skived, as shown at 16, and the looped end 6 of the member 12 is also skived. The skived portions of these extremities are then overlapped and are secured together by the stitching 14 heretofore mentioned, thus giving the leash a finished a pearance.

When t e device is used as a leash, the catch 9 is engaged with a ring or the like in the collar worn by the animal, and the loop A is used as the hand-grip of the device.

When, however, the device is used as a whip. the end carrying the clip or catch 9 is gripped by the hand and the looped portion A is used as the whip.

When it is desired to secure an animal in a fixed position, such, for example, as to a fence, door, or the like, the loop portion A is engaged with a suitable projection and the sliding element 15 is moved along the device until the loop A is contracted about the projection, thus retaining the animal and securing the device against accidental displacement.

From the foregoing it is apparent that the present invention provides a restraining device which may be used either as hand leash or whip, or the device may further be used as means for leashing an animal in a given place.

What is claimed is:
