IMPROVEMENT IN CLASPS FOR ELASTIC BANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 15l,036, dated May 19, 1874; application filed March 24, 1874.
rlhe elastic bands usually employed are ati tachcd to the boards forming the tile-binders, or to the pocket or other book by a metallic clasp, into which the ends of the elasticiare inserted and retained, or else the ends ot' the elastic are sewed together or glued into a slip or receptacle, so as to hold them in place. In
cases where the elastic becomes injured or brokenthere is great diti culty in replacing it or introducing another. Vhere an endless rubber band has been used there has not been any convenient means for introducing a new endless elastic band in case of injnryto the elastic connected with the reference-tile or similar article. My invention is made for connecting an endless ruliber-band to a reference-tile, pocket-book, or other article, and for allowing la new elastic band to be applied at any time. I make use of a holder with a mouth, through which the elastic is introduced edgewise and held in place. If the elastic is injured it can be removed and another substituted, and the 4elastic band need not be introduced until the book is sold for use, thereby allowing for two or more endless elastic bands being furnished with each reference-tile or book, and inserted into the attachment, as required for use.
In the drawing, Figure l is a perspective View of the attachment before it is connected with the reference-file or book. Fig. 2 shows the attachment and elastic upon a referenceile. Fig. 3 is a section ot' the same, and Fig.
4 shows a modification inthe shape of the opening or mouth.
The attachment may be of any suitable material, but sheet metal is preferred. The metal strip a is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, as bent at b b, with the portion d resting against the portion c, and forming a spri1'1gmouth at i through which the endless elasticband is inserted edgewise, so as tobe drawn into the space within the clasp or attachment that is ot' a size and shape corresponding, or nearly so,`to the sectional shapel ot' the elastic. If the portion d is made shorter the mouth t' will be between thetwo portions d and c, as in Fig. 4. This attachment is provided with points 0 o that pass through the card-board or other ma teria-l o' of the reference-tile or book or other article, and are bent out iiat, so as to firmly secure the said attachment in place. The elastic band s is endless, and hence will be held in place, simply by passing the band at one portion ot' it into the attachm cnt through the mouth, and this can be repeated and new elastics introduced as the others become i11- jured and are removed.
I claim as my invention- The clasp for elastic bands, consisting of a plate with struck-up attaching-points o, and with ends d and c bent over or lapped to form retaining-tongues, between which is the 1n outh "i, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 21st day of March, A. D. 1874.
