To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PARKER J. OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at ,Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to caps and particularly to caps of the knitted class, and the object of my invention is to provide a cap of the class specified with a mufier portion which is normally supported upon the body portion of the cap and is adapted to be moved into operative position and passed around the neck of the wearer; a further objectvbeing to provide a cap of the class specified with ear-lap portions normally supported in connection with the body portion of the cap and which are adapted to be passed downwardly over the ears and beneath the chin of the wearer, and the end portions of the separate fia s secured beneath the chin, an the mu or portion of the cap being also adapted to be secured to the attaching means of said ear-lap portions, and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a cap of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction, neat and ornamental in appearance in the several uses thereof and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully-disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fi 1 is a side view of the cap indicating t e same upon the head of the wearer with the several parts thereof in their normal position;

In Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, 1 have shown one form of my improved cap which oomprises a main -cap body portion 10 of the desired shape and construction, said cap being provided at the front end portion thereof with a turned up part 11 which gives a neat finish and ornamental appearance to the front portion of the cap and to the back portion of the cap is secured a muflier member 12 of the approximate shape shown in detail in Fig. 4 of the drawing, and the outer corner portions of which are rounded as shown at 13 to form approximately pointed ends 14 provided with button-holes 15 or other means of attaching said end portions of the member 12 to a suitable attaching device, or to each other as the case may be when inoperative position, and when in inoperative position said end portions are adapted to be connected with buttons 16 or other attaching devices and secured to the body portion 10 of the cap at the opposite sides thereof, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing.

The side portions of the cap are provided with ear-laps 17, the free end portions of which'are approximately V-shaped in form as shown at 18 and provided with buttonholes and the like 19 whereby said ear-laps may be connected with buttons or other attaching devices 20 secured to the side portions of'the body 10 of the cap near the top thereof when said ear.-laps are in their inoperative position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and one of said ear-laps 17 is provided on the inner face thereof when the ear-laps are in the position shown in Fig. 1 with the button 21, whereby the other earlap 17 may be connected with the first named ear-lap below the chin of the wearer when said ear-laps are in their operative position as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawmg.

It will be a1 0 noted on a consideration of Fig. 3 of the (1 ing that the end portions of the mufller member 12 are also attached to the button 21 when said member 12 is in its operative position, and the rounded corner portions 13 produce a V-shaped effect, as shown at 22 in Fig. 3 of the drawing at the front neck portion of the wearer beneath the chin thus giving a neat and finished appearance at such point, and will permit of the exposure of a necktie or the like therethrough and will present a dressy efi'ect.

With my improved construction as shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, it will be apparent that the ear-laps 17 may be used independent of the mufiler, but in very cold or stormy weather and when it is desired to protect the back of the head and neck portion of the wearer, the muffler member 12 may be folded downwardly and the ends thereof connected with the button 21, as shown in F1 3 of the drawing. In other words, I provi e a cap of the class specified which has three independent uses, one as a cap proper as shown in Fig. 1, thesecond as a cap provided with ear-laps as shown in Fig. 2, and the third as a cap in the form ofa helmet in which the ear-laps and muflier member 12 produce a helmet effect of the entire device.

In Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown a slight modification of the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, in which the muflier member 12 is of greater length than the muflier member 12 in the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, and in this form of construction the end portions of the mufller member 12 are approximately V-shaped in form as shown at 23 and are provided with button-holes 24 adapted to be normally connected with buttons 25 secured to the turned-up portion 11 of the cap, or the oposite sides thereof, as clearly shown in ig. 6 of the drawing and, in this construction, it will be apparent that thebuttons 16 employed in the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, will be limited but otherwise the construction is precisely the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive.

Another feature of the construction shown in Figs. 5 and ti lies in the fact that the turned-up portion 11 may be used as a peak by merely extending the central rounded portion 26 thereof outwardly when the ca is in use, and this may also be done with t e construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, if desired, or the turned-up portion may be affixed to the body 10 of the cap.

1 to 4. inclusive, and while I have stated that I preferably make the cap and the various apparent that I am not necessarily limited to the material employed, and various other changes in and modifications of the construcwhat I claim as new and desire body tion herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
