BESSIE H. MERRHE, OF CLEVELANZI),.VOI-IlO.l
' BRUSH..
Application filed May 3.1', 1.923. Serial No. 642,499.y
To all whom it may Concern.'
Be it known that I, Bessin H. MERRIHEW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clevelanch'in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement inV Brushes, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description. l
This invention relates to scrubbing brushes, and while of quite general application for washing and scrubbing 4operations, it is especially useful for washing dishes.
An object of the present invention is to provide a scrubbing brush formed by a pair of looped bristle brushes'so formed and secured togetherthat they will retain a cake of soap between them without any additional holding means.
A further object is to provide a scrubbing brush which has a relatively large scrubbing surface and which can be readily 'inserted in cups, pitchers, tumblers, jars, pots and other dishes and cooking utensils.
A further object is to provide a scrubbing closed means, however, constituting but onev of the various mechanical forms in which theA principle of the invention may be employed.
Reference should be hadV to the accompanying vdrawings forming a part of this specification in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional viewr showing the brushes andv the means for attaching the brushes to thehandle; Fig. 2 isa side elevation of the' brushes; Fig. 3 is a front elevation -of the brushes; Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the brushes. l
Referring to the accompanying drawings, i, the scrubbing brush consists of a large brush 1 and a smaller brush 2. The brushes 1 and 2 are both looped twisted-in-wire :bristle brushes and are so mounted that lthe :side face of the smaller brush lies against the side face of the 'larger brush. The large brush l has an elongated loop of twisted width andV length. The loop 5 has radially extending bristles 6 secured between the strands thereof which are considerably shorter than the bristles of the larger brush. The brushes 1 and 2 are secured to a suitable handle 7 in such a manner that the small brush is held tightly in engagement with the larger brush, rthe brushes, however, may be sprung apart sufficiently at their outer ends to permit a cake of soap such as indicated by the numeral in Figs. 2 and 4 tovbeinserted between them. The space between the sides of thekwire loop 5 of the smaller brush is so narrow that the cake of soap cannot be pushed through this loop. The engagement between the bristles ofthe small brush and the bristles of the large brush prevents the small brush being pushed far enough toward the large brush toforce the soap out through the loop' of: the larger brush. The handle 7 is made long enough so that dishesvmay be washed without puty to put the hands in the water. The cake of o-f the brush the surface being cleaned will i be engaged alternately by the short relativelyv sti bristles of the small brush and the longer more .flexible bristles .of the large brush so thatthe particles adhering to the articles being washed may be easily loosened and'washed off. y
vThe handle 7 O is provided with a longitudinal borev 9 which extends through the greater portion of its length and receives' the shank of the brush which is formed by extensions of the wire forming the loo -s of the brushes land 2. At'it's fopen en `the handle is provided With a suitable ferrule Which has an opening through Which the shank of the brush entends] The loops of the tWo brushes as Well as the attaching shank are preferably yformed of one length of twisted Wire. The portion of the Wire forming the loop of the larger brush hasone end extending Idown into the .handle .and 4fr'g'i'm the opposite en'da loop 11 eXtendsfin-to the'handle.' The -loop of the smaller brush is*'anextension of the loop 11, the wire being benl-,back upon itself 4to form the loop 5 and extending back into the handle. In addition to theiloop'll Within the handle there are Athe two free end portions l2 and 13 of the Wire which vareV bent at their ends to form hook portions la and which bear with spring pressure against the Wall ot the bore l), V and-serve to yieldingly hold the shank in adjusted position Within' the handle. A :QSSiP'in y16 extends vthrough the bore adja- ,Qcenttheouter end thereof through the loop 11H-and between the Wire ends l2 and 13.
` VWlrenthe brushes are secured in the position ls hovfvn in the drawing, the small brush 2 is held tightly against the larger brush l. YVheneverit isdesired to clean the brushes, i. e., 4to remove accumulations of dirt from between the brushes, the brushes may be we we@ erger brush..
pulled outwardly until the end of the loop lll engages the 'Across-pin 16 in which posiltion the brushes may be readily spread apart t'operini't the cleaning of the inner sides .ills/reet" Y Having described my invention, I claim. A device of the character described, comprising a handle, and a .pair of bristle hesse'cured to the handle, each of said `es having a core`in the formof a loop ivith bristles radiating from the core vand surrounding the same substantially throughout the length yof Ithe loop, said brushes being held 'in ace to face engagement with eachother with their loops side by side, one .0f .seid brushes, beine' Smaller than the other rand positioned centrally with respect to the 'larger brush. l
42`."A device of 4the character described, .comprising "handle, .and a of bristle "l :es securedito thehandle, eachV of said having-score inthe form of lO'OP lrvith bristles radiatingdrom .the core and surroundingthe saine substantially .throughout thelength of. the loop,`said"brushes 'be- Ving held face .to face' engagement With sash Diller with their-10ers siiie by side, 011s 'Qfsaidbrushes being 'smaller than the other having shorter Vbristles, said smaller Vbruslrbeing positionedy centrally with ree. eerie? 'el iilerssisr -dsgseiilisdi comprising a handle, and l.a .pair of bristle brushes olI similar shapesecured to the handle, each of said brushes having a core in the form of a loop With bristles radiating from the core and surrounding the same substantially throughout the length of the loop, said brushes being yieldingly held in face to face engagement with each other With their loops sideby side, one of said brushes being smaller vthan the other and positioned centrally With respect ,to the larger brush, said larger brush having the bristles which extend inwardly from one side ofthe loop engaging the bristles Which eXtend inwardly fronithe opposite side ofthe loop.
' ,4. VA device of the character described comprising av hollow handle .having an opening in one end, anda pair of bristle brushes .each having a bristle carrying core in the form of a loop the cores forming the loops to which the bristles are kattached being eX- tended to provide means for attaching fthe brushes to the handle, at least one .of the brushes having an elongated extension slidable Within the handle so that the brushes may be separatedto permit rcleaning thereof, meansv'for yieldingly holding the slidable extension in adjusted position Within the handle, and means forlimitingthe outward movement thereof.-
5. n' device of the character described comprising a handle With a longitudinal bore extending 'from one end thereof, and a pair of bristle brushes-each having a bristle carryingcore in the `form of a loop the cores 'forming theloops to which the bristles are attached being extended to provide an elongated shank slidably mounted Within the bore of fthe handle uso thatthe brushes any be' pas@ @nearly from fh@ and of lhshldle slid seperated t0' permit Cleaning thereof, and means 'for'liiniting the-outward movement of the shank and for yieldingly holding the shank in 'its innermost position in the handle.
(i.V A device of the character described comprising al handle"7 and a pair 'of brushes mounted on thejhandle, each of said brushes having a core in the form of a loop -With -lilisilss radiating from the @Ors .and surrounding the Same Substantially throughout the length .O f th 10er), said brushes being held in 'face torace engagement with each othenthe loop of one of -savidbrushgslbeing narrower than the loop of the other and positioned centrally with respect t0 the larger loop,`the space between the sides of the loop of .each core being closed 'by overlapping bristles extending 'frein 'Opposite s i'desofthe loop.
In Vtestimony whereof, I hereunto my signature.
