Be it known that I, V/'ILLIAM L. Trimon- MANN, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Muskegon, in the county oit' Muskegon and State ot' Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Operating Bevices, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to dental apparatus but more particularly to operating pieces 'for use with dental engines and has for its primary object to provide a simple, sanitary and etlicient device of this type.
These pieces are used by dentists to operate within the mouth ot a patient and the very nature of their use renders them exceed ingly unsanitary unless frequently and thoroughly cleaned. Dentists rarely clean more than the outside of these devices because of the time required in the taking apart and the assembly. The piece soon becomes filled with filth and grit which is conducted from mouth to mouth. r)The grit in this deposit produces a constant grinding of the parts which very materially shortens the lite of the device.
l have provided an operating piece which is simple in construction and may be almost instantly taken apart or assembled without the aid ot any tools. rl`he disassembled parts may be quickly and easily cleaned, sterilized and oiled in a thorough manner.
The many other objects and advantages or' my improved operating piece will be better understood by reference to the following specification when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating selected embodiments thereof in which Fig. 1 is a central vertical section of an operating piece embodying my invention.

A head 28 is formed upon the iiront end of the errule 19 and the tool holder 11 slidably lits over the iree end ot this head. A sleeve 34 lits within the bore of the tool holder 10 and forms a. bearing tor the shaft 33. A star wheel 35 and a collar 3G are secured upon the shaft 33 at opposite ends of the sleeve 311 and act to position the shaft Within this sleeve. rEhe outer portion of the tool holder 11 is provided with a transverse bore 3? Within which the tool holding sleeve 38 operates. rfhis sleeve 1s provided With spaced collars 39 and 40 which fit Within the bore and form bearings for the sleeve. ylhe collar 39 forms a shoulder to engage the opposing shoulder 4l produced by the contraction of the bore 37. The bur or other operating tool 42 its Within the sleeve 58 and is prevented from relative rotation therein by the usual contraction 43 at the upper end of the sleeve. A star Wheel 44 is formed on the sleeve 38 to mesh With the wheel 35 on the shaft 33 to cause this sleeve to he rotated by the spindle l5.
Oppositely disposed guides 45 are formed on the rear face of the. holder ll near its outer end and a tool locking member 46 op,` erates in these guides. This member 44 is preferably made of spring metal and carries a lateral flange 47 which projects over the end of the holder and is adapted to form a closure for the opening 48 in this end Wall. The function of this opening 48 is to permit the Withdrawal of the sleeve 34 and parts` carried thereby. The member 46 forms a closure for the upper end of the bore 37 and i-s provided With a slot 49 which is adapted to admit and engage the upper end of the tool 42 to lock this tool Wit-hin the holder. A spring finger 50 on the member presses against the upper face of the holder and provides a frictional resistance to movement of this member in its guides.
Assuming that the parts are in their a"- sembled position, as indicated in F l, the operating piece is disassembled in the fol-A lowing manner -Insert the linger nail under the flange 47 and draw this flange away from the head as far as the slot 49 will permit. This brings the upper end or head of the tool into registration with the circular enlargement 5.) at the end of this slot and permits the tool to be Withdrawn trom the holder' in the usual manner. The member 4o may now be Wholly withdrawn from the guides 45. The Withdrawal of the member 46 permits the sleeve 3S to be removed by inverting the holder and slightly tapping it if necessary. rlChe sleeve 34 With shaft 38 and parts carried thereby may now be removed by depressing the end of the holder and permitting this sleeve to drop through the opening 48. The holder is next detached from the handpiece by lifting the inner end of the latch 24 with the linger nail sutliciently to'release this latch from the pin and permit the holder to be ufithdrawn from the head 23. rThe detachment ofthe holder 1l permits the shaft 29 to be removed. It should be clearly understood that the specific embodiments of my invention herein shown and described are for the purpose of illustrating the principlesof my invention and l ain aware that the form and arrangementof parts would necessarily be very different in dillerent types of operating pieces. l therefore reserve thn right to make all such changes therein as` fairly fall Within the scope of the following claims.

A dental operating piece comprising a substantially tubular casing having a bend therein intermediate its ends and provided With an opening' at its outer end, a driving spindle extending longitudinally Within saidV casing, a transverse socket in said casing near said outer end. a tool holding sleeve revoluble Within said socket, means insertible through said opening for operatively con,- necting said spindle and said sleeve, and a vclosure for said opening.

A dental operating piece comprising aV substantially tubular casing having abend therein intermediate its ends and provided With an opening at its outer end, a driving spindle eiitendingv longitudinally Within said casing, a socket extending transversely through saidV casing near the outer end, a tool holding' sleeve revoluble YWithin said socket, means insertible through said opening for operatively connecting said spindle and said sleeve, and a latch adapted to re tain said sleeve in said'socket and form a closure for said opening'.

A. dental operating piece comprising a handpiece, a driving spindle revolubly mounted in said handpiece, an angle piece slidable over the outer end of said handpiece and provided with a bend intermediate its ends, a transverse socket in said angle piece near the outer end thereof, a revoluble tool holder in said socket, and driving mechanism extending` through said angle piece and operatively connecting` said spindle with said tool holder.

A dental operating piece comprising a handpiece, a driving spindle revolubly mounted in said handpiece` an angle piece slidable over the outer end of said handpiece and provided With a bend intermediate its ends, a latch tor attaching said angle piece to said handpieee, a transverse socket in said angle piece near the outer end thereof. a. revoluble tool holder in said socket, and shafting in said angle piece operativelyv connecting` said spindle with said tool holder.

An angle piece comprising a substantially tubular casing having a bend formed therein intermediate its ends, a transverse socket in said casing near the outer end thereof, a tool holding member revoluble Within said socket, and a latch .tor retaining said member in said socket and a tool in said member.

An angle piece comprising a substantially tubular casing, a transverse socket in said casing near the outer end thereof, a tool holding sleeve revoluble Within said socket, a latch slidable between guides on said holder to retain said sleeve in said socket and said tool in said sleeve, and means for actuating said sleeve.
8. An angle piece comprising a substantially tubular casing provided With a bend intermediate its ends and having a transverse socket near its outer end, a tool operating sleeve insertible into said socket from the rear end thereof, and a latch for retain ing said sleeve in said socket and a tool in said sleeve.
9. An angle piece comprising a substantially tubular casing, a transverse tool socket in the outer portion oi said casing, a tool operating sleeve iusertible into said socket from the rear end thereof, and a latch plate slidable between guides on said casing into a position to retain said sleeve in said socket and a tool in said sleeve.

A dental operating piece comprising a substantially tubular casing, a driving spindle extending longitudinally within said casing, a transverse socket foi-med in said casing near its outer end, a tool holding sleeve revoluble within said socket, and means insertable through the outer end of said casing for operatively connecting said spindle and said sleeve.
