NITED STATES PATENT QEEIoEo VVAL'IER Gr. COOLIDGE AND EDVARD HEMBERLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GIRDERS AND COLUMNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 52,794, dated July 7, 1574; application filed March 2l, 1874.
CASE B.
of a column formed by two rolled I-bea1ns,`
one plain plate, and two of the said new bars. Fig. 3 is a cross-section ot' a column formed by three I-beams and two ot' said new bars. 4 is a front view of a column or post for use in bridges, roofs, &c., constructed as represented in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side view ot' the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of this invention relates to improvements in the construction ot wroughtiron columns.
The invention will rst be fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, A represents a new form or shape for iron bars for posts or columns, consisting of the plate a with ribbed edges b. B represents plates fitting' into the trough of the said bar to form thickening-plates at the ends of the columns. C represents rolled I -beams or plate-girders to be combined with plates A in the manner shown. F is a plain l plate, straight or tapered, which'may be employed between two I-beams, and C an I- beain in )lace of a )lain )late F. d el are 7 ,l I l 1 pins passing through ends ot columns. These columns may be made by riveting together two bars, A, with one I-beam, C, as shown by Fig. 2; or two bars, A, with two I-beams, C, and one stra-ight or tapered plain plate, F, as shown in Fig. 3; or two of said bars may be united in another form with three I- beams, asshown in Fig. 4.
Diagonal cross bars or braces may be used to connect the two shapes A in place of the I-beam, by having a ange formed on the shapes A, along the middle, and bolting the bars to them. The coln1nn,it` used in structures with pin connections, will have the small plates B, before mentioned, riveted to the ends. These plates B ll the trough ofthe bars A, and are to give additional bearing to the pins d. d, as'shown in Figs. 5 and (i.
The advantages of our wrought-iron colulnn over others known and in use consist of snperior strength for a given amount of metal, simplicity and eheapness of construction, and accessibility of all exposed parts for inspection and painting. f
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. rEhe combination of two bars7 A, with one or more I-beams, and a plain plate, F, for columns or posts, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of end plates B with bars A, I-beam C, and a connecting-pin, d, substantially as speciiied.
