Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH F. DONKIN, OF GRAYSON, CALIFORNIA..
IMPROVEMENT IN OIL-CAN STOPPERS.
Specification forming part ofLet-ters Patent NQ. 152,980, dated July 14, 1874; application filed March 24, 1874.
To all Iwhom it may concern Be it known that I, J osEPH F. DoNKrN, ot' Grayson, Stanislaus county, State of California, haveinvented a Stopper for theNozzles of Goal Oil Cans and other Vessels; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.
M y invention relates to an improved device which is intended to be used for closing the nozzles ot' cans for liquids; and it consists in the use or" a double elastic stopper, the inner portion of which is stift'ened and enters the nozzle, while the outer portion passes over the outside ot' the nozzle. This stopper is connected with or attached to the nozzle by means ot a chain and an adjustable elastic ring, which holds it firmly wherever it Amay be placed.
Referring to the accompanying drawing', Figure l is a view of my stopper and its ring. Fig. 2 is a View showing its attachment to a nozzle or spout.
A is the inner part of my stopper, which is made tapering, and is provided with a screw or pin, I), which extends through, or nearly tllrougln-Lit, for the purpose of stii'ening it so that it will enter the nozzle readily.- The outer part of my stopper consists of a cylinder,
c, which maybe formed at the same time with theinnerportion; or it may be made separately, and afterward secured to it.- The construction ofthe inner tapering plug with its srrrounding cylinder forms a space between them, into which the nozzle tits, as shown in Fig. 2, and this effectual] y prevents any leakage.
In order to secure this stopper to this nozzle in such a manner as to make it removable it' desired, I attach a short chain, D, to a ring or loop formed at the end of the pin Z1, and this chain has an elastic ring, E, at the other end, which clasps the nozzle F firmly enough to retain it where it may be placed. By this arrangement I am enabled to et'teotually close the discharge-nozzles ofl cans, and at the same time secure the stopper so that it cannot` be lost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The elastic stopper consisting of the inner plug A, with its strengthening-rod b and the outer inclosing part o, constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
In Witness whereofI hereunto setmy hand and seal.
