' C. T. KITTLESON CHILJs HAND BAG Filed oct. 11, 1923 W Maz,
ATTORNEYS To all/whom it may concern:
Patented Apr. 14, 1925.
"UNITED STATES CAROLINE. xlrzrnnson, or Grimace, mentors.`
l oHILns HAND BAG.
Application fil-ed October 11, 19231.
Be it known that I, CARoLrNn T. KrrrnnsoN, acitizen of' the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ot Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Childrens Hand Bags, ot which the following is full, clear', and exact description.
My invention relates toimprovements in hand bags for children, and" it' consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is' to provide a novel form ot hand bag', which will appeal particularly to a child, and which will serve a double purpose of a doll and a hand bag combined.
A furtherobject of my invention is to provice a device of the type described.I in which the hand bag has the appearance of a doll when closed, but which can he instantly opened to obtain access tothe interior, when desired.
A Jfurther object of my invention is to provide a novelty in the form of a combined doll and hand bag` which is simple in construction and which is relatively cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the 'following' specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying' drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Figure 1 is a front view, showing one em bodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, and
Figure 3 is a view showing the manner in which the draw string is applied.
In carrying out my invention, I provide an `upper bust portion, which may be made of wood or other suitable material. This portionA is best shown in Figure 3. It comprises a head 1, a neck 2, and a trunk portion 3. The trunk portion is provided with two vertically extending bores 4 and 5 respectively, and is also provided with a transverse bore 6 intersecting the vertical bores. This upper portion is provided with a draw string 7.
`As will be seen from Figure 3, the ends of the draw string are passed down through the vertical bores 4 and 5, thence outwardly in opposite directions through the bore G, thence around the back of the 'trunk portion, thence inwardly at the opposite ends,

and after crossing are brought' down through the lower part ot the vertical bores andtied atthev point 8. lt is obvious that' by pulling on the central upper loop portion 7, the cross portions 9 and 1() of the draw string will be drawn tight,l and will be frictionalily held in the drawn position.V
In Figures 1 and 21,1 have shower leg portions 11` which are made ot'any suitable ma terial, such as woodY These leg portions are secured preferably to a garment' member 12 similar to bloomers. As will be seen from Figure Q, however, the bloomer portion is bent back upon itseliE and then extends up- 7ardly to form a skirt portion 13, so that the bloomers and skirt really form one piece. The rear side 141 of a bag' portion is secured to the trunk' member the front portion 15 of the pocket member joining and being secured to the upper portion of the skirt member 13. At their point of union is a band loop, through which the cord portions 9 and 10 see Figure 3) are passed, so that the pocket may open outwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, or may be closed when the stringl is drawn tightly, as shown in 'full lines in Figure 2. The rear portion 14 of the pocket contains a mirror 16, which is secured in position,l so that when the pocket is opened, the mirror may he brought in position where it can be readily viewed.
The arms 17 are preferably made of wood or other similar material. and are secured to cloth ends 18. which may be tacked to the wooden trunk portion The latter is covered with material 19 to simulate a waist.
i and the sleeves Q0 of the waist are designed to cover the ends 18 in the manner shown in Figure 1.
The skirt portion and the pocket portion, together with its mirror, iorm the connecting: body portion between the upper trunk member and the leg members. In other words. the body of the doll is largely formed by the hanl and the dolls clothes.
.From the foregoing description ot the various parts of the device, the operation there-ot may be readily understood. The pocket may be filled with anything which is usually carried in a hand bac', such as `a handkerchief, a purse, or a powder puit. or other article. Then now the draw string 7 is pulled upwardly, the pocket will be closed. 'lhe contents of the bag tend to cause the skirt portion to bulge outwardly, and hence the illusion oi' a plump doll.
" spirit and the scope of the invention.
I claim: l. A combined doll andv hand bag coinprising a body portion having bores therein, a skirt having its front portion secured to said body portion, and its rear portion 'tree of said body, a drawstring tor carrying the doll, said string being passed through said bores and through the rear portion of Said skirt, and a pocket having one side secured to saidbody and the other side secured to the rear portion of said skirt, whereby said pocket is adapted to be closed when said drawstring is tightened.
2. A combined doll and hand bag coniprising -a bust portion having bores therein, a head rigidly secured to said bust portion, a skirt having its front portion secured to said bust portion, and its yrear portion i'ree of said bust portion, a pocket having one side secured to said bust portion and the other side secured to the rear portion of said skirt, and a drawstring arranged to pass through the portion of saidvbust portion and through the rear upper edge or' said skirt portion whereby said pocket is adapted to be closed when said drawstring is tightened.
3. A combined doll and hand bag conr prising a bust portion hav-ing bores therein, a head rigidly secured to said bust portion, a skirt having its front portion secured to said bust portion, and its rear portion free of said bust portion, a pocket having one side securedk to said bust portion and the other side secured to the rear portion of said skirt, a drawstring arranged to pass through the portion of said bust portion and through the rear upper edge orl said skirt portion whereby said pocket is adapted to be closed When said drawstring is tightened, and leg portions suspended from said skirt portion.
4L. A combined dollv and hand bag comprising a bust portion having'bores therein, an inseparable head carried by said bust portion, a skirt having its front portion secured to said bust portion, and its rear portion tree of saidv bust portion, a pocket having one side secured to said bust portion and the other side secured to the rear portion of saidvskirt, and a drawstring arranged to pass through the portion of said bust portion and through the rear upper edge of said skirt portionV whereby said pocket is adapted to be closed when said drawstring is tightened.v
