BOOKMARK.
To all whom it. may concern:
- Be it. known that Isaac. HnLLnRMAN,'citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book marks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to book marks. One object thereof is to provide a deviceof the character described which shall be readily attached to a book and mark a desired'page thereof.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described -which may be readily detached fro-m the book.
' V A still further object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which shall extend flush with the top of the book,'shall be neat in appearance,
. simple in construction, and comparatively embodiment of my invention attached to the front cover of a book;
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the embodiment of my invention shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof. Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 is a book, having the front and rear covers 11, 11 respectively and the leaves 12 includ-.
ed therebetween. The book mark 13 com-.
prises a clamp member 14 formed preferv ably of resilient material such as worked copper or silver, and having the spaced inner and'outer clamping plates 14*, 14 respectively. The latter are preferably stamped from one flat piece. of, material of any desired design or shape and then bent over so. as to provide the clamp 14 adapted" to engage in the space 14 either the front or rear book cover, or to embrace a number of the. clamp. The
posed adjacent each upper end 18 of the" rear clampingplate 14? substantially longer than the front plate 14 so asto aiforda firmer hold on the book. Furthermore,

the plates 14, 14 are inclined toward each other so that the clamp is automatically adjusted to various thicknesses of book covers.
7 For marking the place in the book, the usual ribbon 15 or strip of other thin flexible material is provided. The latter. is'suspended from a wire member 16 disposed, in the eye portions 17 preferably formed integral with eye portions 17 are disrear clamp plate 14 and the wire member 16 extends adjacent the upper edge thereof. The eye portions 17 may readily be formed after the stamping'has been bent to provide the clamp by passing the latter through a suitable hand die. The wire 16 is then inserted and rivetedat eitherend. if so desired, and the ribbon then susp'endedtherefrom. 3 i j The application of the device is now clear.
The book mark is clamped to thebook cover in the manner shown in Fig. rality of leaves, extends downwardly flat on the inner face of the cover or of one of the leaves. When it is desired to mark a particular place in the book, the ribbon is raised and stretched 1, or to a pluover the upper edges of the leaves and then While stretched across the. desired page. reading, the ribbon may be allowed to hang loosely away from thebook and inserted at the page to be marked when desired.
It is clear that there is thus provided a neat. and simple device for marking the page of a book which may be attached thereto without harming the book, or without detracting from-the appearance of the book or interfering with the comfort of the reader. book-mark to a plurality the book may be replaced no book mark were attached thereto.
of the book pages.
Furthermore, by attaching the 10o on the shelf as if h 1 so that the ribbon marker I It will thusbe seen that there is provided a device in which the several. objects of this.
invention are achieved and'which is well adapted. to meet the conditions of practical use. v v i As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention and as va-.
rious changes might be madein 13116 6111 bodiment above set forth, it'is to be understood that I allmatter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawingsis to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-:
A book marker comprising a one-piece clamp having gripping jaws of unequal length adapted to engage with the cover of a book a pair of eye members formed integrally with said clamp to extend at right angles to the longer of said jaws, a rod member'disposed between and secured by said eye members, and a marker extending along said rod member, said marker being adapted to swing in a plane at right angles t0 the cover that normally-engages with said clamp.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ISAAC HELLERMAN.
