Description
T. G. BO0N..
Sleds N 154,4 4 7 Patented Aug .25,1874.
WITNESSES ATTORNEYS M V fiINVENTOR;
I THE GRAPHIC CO. FHOYO'LITHJSM 4-! PARK PLACE, NJ.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS G. BOON, OF SHARON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,448, dated August 25, 1874; application filed May 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS G. BQON, of Sharon, in the county of Noble and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sleds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of a sled, showing the bow-front section. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the bow-front.
This invention has relation to the construction of wooden sleds; and it consists in providing an iron bow or front adapted to be readily attached to the end of a straight runner, and beveled at. its rear end to break joints with the shoe, as hereinafter more fully described.
The object of this invention is to enable sleds of strong character to be economically constructed without having recourse to curved or bent timber.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates a. sled,-havi-ng its runner made of straight timber b b. O designates the shoe or strap, which is not designed to extend forward over the bend, but terminates at a in an end beveled upward and forward. D represents the bow-front, made of iron, and consisting of a shank, c, and shoe d. The shank c is designed to be of sufficient strength to sustain itself without a wooden or other support, and
the wooden runner b. In use the wear is for the most part on this bow-shoe d, which is designed to be made sufficiently thick and stout to last a long time. Although short it is well secured at each end by the shank and bevel-joint, and cannot be easily turned or displaced. At the joint the rearward and downward bevel of the ends in contact preventsvertical displacement of either strap or bow by the forcible insertion therein of pieces of ice or other extraneous matter.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
For a sled-runner, the bent front attachment consisting of the shank c and shoe d, terminating in a downwardly and rearwardly beveled end, 2, and provided with a bolt-hole for attachment to the frame of a sled, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS G. BOON. Witnesses: MATHEW STEEN,
DUDLEY W. MARTIN.
