0. J. WESTFALL HOCKEY BOO T Filed July 26, 1924 Patented July 14, 1925.
UNI'aEn sriisfrEs OSCAR JOHN WESTFALL, OF HAMILTON, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO THE JOHN MGPHERSON COMPANY LIMITED, OF HAMILTON, CANADA.
HOCKEY BOOT.
Application filed July 26, 1924. Serial No. 728,299.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Osoen JOHN lVEsT- FALL, of the city of Hamilton, in the county of W'entworth, Province of Ontario, Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hockey Boots, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hockey boots of r the type shown in prior United'States Patent No. 811,316 of January th, 1906, in
l which an ankle support is interiorly tened thereto which is passed through a slit in the other side of the shoe and secured to a buckle. In this prior construction the ankle support is secured in place in such a way'that a pull on the strap only acted on one side of the support, so that as far as supporting the Wearers ankle, the other side of the support might as Well have been omitted.
The object of the present invention is therefore to so secure the support in place and to so arrange its fastenings, that when the securing strap is tightened up, both sides of the ankle support are drawn on to give support to the ankle.
I attain my object by means of the constructions hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is a plan view of the improved shoe.
The boot 1 is of ordinary construction. lVithin the shoe is secured the ankle support 2, preferably by one or more lines of stitching at the back of the shoe and also a line of stitching adjacent its lower. edge in such a manner that the upper forward part at each side is left free of the upper of the boot.
To the forward edge of one side of the support is secured a strap 3 and at the forward edge of the other side of the support is formed an eye or loop 4 through which said strap may pass. This eye or loop may I be formed by simply slitting the support adjacent its forward edge, although I preferably form it as a separate part formed of bent Wire.
In the side of the upper of the shoe adside of the ankle support to which the strap is secured drawn tight,-but also, through the passage of the strap through the eye 4, the other side of the anklesupport as well.
What I claim is 1. A hockey boot having an ankle support interiorly fastened therein, said boot having its upper divided at the front and provided with a series'of eyelets along each of the adjacent edges through which a fastening lace may be passed; a strap secured adjacent the forward edge of, one side of said support; an eye adjacent the forward edge of the other side of the support through which said strap may pass, a slot for the passage of the strapbeing formed close to said eyelets in the side of the boot at the side adjacent the portion of the support to which the strap is secured; and means on the outside of the boot for securing the extending portion of the strap.
2. A hockey boot having an ankle'suo port interiorly fastened therein, so that its upper forward portions-are free to move independently of the boot; and fastening means for the support comprising a strap secured adjacent the forward edge of one cured adjacent the forward edge of one side of said support; an eye secured to the forward edge of the other side of the support through which said strap may pass, a slot for the passage of the strap being formed in the side of the boot at the side adjacent the portion of the support to which the strap is secured; and a buckle secured on the Outside of the boot for securing the extending portion on the strap. 10
Signed at 'Hamilton, Canada, this 10th day of July 1924:.
OSCAR JOHN VVESTFALL. \Vitnesses:
