Be it known that, I, WILLIAM J. REDDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements -in Shoe Uppers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to shoes having ankle bracing means in their uppers.

Prior to my invention the uppers on shoes of the above type were provided with a lin'- ing having pockets formed thereon in which stays fo-r supporting the ankle were placed and with flaps sewed to the upper edges of the uppers and overlapping the pockets to prevent the stays in the pockets from com ing out. Such construction did not hold the stays in the pockets, but allowed them to double up the flap and protrude from the pockets, thereby forming a hump' which dug into the ankle and caused discomfort.V

The objects of my invention are to provide a lining for the uppers in which the pockets for the stays are so arranged that the stays may be readily inserted but cannot come out or double up or bulge any part of the lining.

These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an inside view of an upper having my invention app-liedv thereto,

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates an upper having a lining 2 secured thereto by stitching 3. The lining may be mostly cloth as shown in Figure 1 or mostly leather as shown in Figure 4. When the lining is as shown in Figure 1, it is composed of al cloth part 4 having side stays 5 sewed thereto and a topband 6 secured to the cloth part 4 by stitching 7. The side stays and top band are secured to the upper by the stitching 3. A pair of plies 8 are secured to the back of the lining 2 by stitching 9- to form pockets 10 in which ankle supporting stays 11 are the leather part 6a by stitching 7a.

To insert the suporting stays in th pock` ets, it is merely necessary to bend the top of the upper outward on the line vof the slit and slip the stay into the pocket. When the top of the upper is returned to its normal posit-ion the upper part of the pocket will enclose the stay and hold it against Vdisplacement as shown in Figure 1. a slit in the lining to form an entrance into the pocket-s, the lining cannot bulge or double up to form humps because the stitching forming the pockets will always hold the lining in position. v

While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appendedv claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is y 1. A shoe upper provided with stay pockets, each pocket having an ent-rance opening between its up-per and lower end, wherein stays are adapted to extend above and below the entrance opening.
