Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAOOB JOHANN, OF sr., LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE BOXES.
Specieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,988, dated September 15, 1874 applicatlonled June 17, 1874. Y
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JACOB J OIIANN, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of `Missouri, have invented an Improved Oar- Axle-Lubricating BOX, of which the following diminishes in fullness to its bottom. The cap is hinged by a bolt opposite to that of the lug, and has its closing edges similarly provided with the compound tapering faces aforesaid, to correspond with those of the lug, and form, when locked in the recess thereof,l a most tight, secure, and self-locking engagement.
Of the drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan section on line oo x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, properly, of the recessed lug. Fig. 4 is a perspective, more proper, of the closing edge of the cap.
A, Figs. l, 2, and 3, represents the cast caraxle journal-box. B is my improved recessed lug. This I cast to form part of one side of the oil-box A. The lug B I form to have the closing side or end b, and outer or front side b, and thus form a retaining-recess, b2. (See Figs. 1, 2, 3.) The sides b b1 of the recess b2 taper or incline from the top to the bottom, consequently said recess presents a greater fullness or holding capacity at top, which gradually decreases to its closed bottom, as indicated in Figs. 1, 2, 3. In order to adapt to the recessed lug B aforesaid the closing edges of the cap C, I therefore provide same with corresponding fitting faces; hence c is the end-tapering face of the cap, which corresponds in inclination to that of the face b of the recess b2, and o1 is its front-tapering face, corresponding to the front face b1 of the recess 112. (See Figs. 1, 2, 4..) The fullness or capacity of the closing edge of the cap C is therefore, also, such as to decrease in fullness from top to bottom, (see Fig. 4,) and thus oorrespond with the recess of the lug B. The taper face o of the cap conjointly with the contiguous taper face b of the lug B, secures said cap in closed position, prevents it from falling through the lug, and, in fact, the lateral motion of the car tends to Wedge the tighter the cap in its recess, and thus there is no possibility of selfdisengagement. The tapering face C of the cap, conjointly With the contiguous taper face b1 of the lug, forms a tight fit, prevents dirt, dust, and undue matter entrance, and otherwise affords a most secure locking engagement. lThe cap C thus formed is hinged by a bolt, cz, to the opposite side of the lubricating-box from that ofthe lug.
The operation of my device is apparent, together with its advantages over the ordinary and Well-known ways of securin g caps to boxes of this nature.
1. In a car-axle box, the lug B having. Sides b b1, and tapering recess b2, as and for the purpose set forth. v
2. The cap C, having tapering faces c o1, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The lug B, having recess b2, With inclined faces b b1, in combination with a hinged cap, C, having tapering faces o c1, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of said invention I have hereunto set my hand.
JACOB JOHANN.
Witnesses WILLIAM W. HERTHEL, OHAS. F. MEISNER.
