"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
,GEOBGE E. TERRY AND I. VAN TRUMP, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA; SAID VAN TRUMP ASSIGNOB 'IO MARVIN WISEMAN, OF. SAN FRANCISCO, CALI- IOBNIA.
EYESHIELD.
Application ma Se'ptemberl, .1923. Serial 80. 660,618.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that we, GEORGE E. TERRY and HARRY F. VAN TRUMP, citizens of the United States, residing at San Francisco, 1n
6 the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented 'certainnew and useful Im rovements in Eyeshields; and
we do dec are the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventlon,
" such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. V
Our invention aims to provide a slmple and inexpensive, yet an effective and reliable eye shield to be worn while asleep for the purpose of excluding all light, thus rotectlng the eyes therefrom, inducing s cop, and serving to strengthen the optic nerves by giving them entire rest from light.
' 7 With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, thedescription being supplemented by the accompanying drawings. Figure 1 is a perspective view of the in vention in use. Figure 2 is a perspective view of the shield and its attaching means as manufactured and placed on sale. 7, Figure-3 is a detail sectional view on line "3-3 of Fi 2.
In the drawings above briefly described, the numerals 1 designate a pair of non-trans parent eye shields which are preferably of elli tical form, connected by a suitable nose brid geQ, and provided with extensions 3 and 4 respectively. transparent material may be used in the manufacture of the device, such as pro trl'llly e shields and the ortions 2, 3 and 4, formed of an external p y 5 of black velvet, an internal ply 6 of suitable satin, and an intermediate stifiening ply 7 which is formed of II any desired material and retains the shields in proper form. This form is preferably concave at the inner sides of the shields'to prevent contact with the eyelashes and convex at the outer sides of said shields.
Theextensions 3 and 4 are passed through ribbon 12.. The other end of the ribbon 12 and very desirable and effective, for
While any suitable nonslots in small'plates 8,and 9 of non-corrosive metal or other desired material, such as celluloid, said extensions being turned back 'upon themselves and stitched or otherwise secured, as indicated at 10. An adjustable elastic strap 11 is, connected with plate 8, for instance by passing-it through a slot in the latter, and the rear end-of this strapis attached to one endof a relatively inelastic strap or has an adjustableelastic stra 13 connected thereto, and a suitable detacha le connection, such as loopl, and stud 15, is provided'between this strap 13 and the plate 9. An archedhead strap 16 has its ends secured to the ends of strap 12 or to the elastic straps 11 and 13 if desired, and the intermediate portion of said strap 16, is connected by another strap 17 with the center of the stra 12. Thus, a suitable headgear is rovide for holding the eye shields 1, in p ace over the users eyes. Suitable ties 18 may be provided for connection with each other under the users chin, to prevent upward movement of the headgear. i Byfollowing the construction herein disclosed or some substantial equivalent thereof, a shield is provided which will be simple and inexpensive, easily attached and detached,
ving
complete rest totheoptic nerves uringsleep, and for excluding all light and thus inducing sleep. The head gear passes around the back of t e head andovcr the-top of the' head and the ties pass under the chin so that it firmly but comfortably holds the eye shield in place over the eyes during sleep, even though the wearer may slee with lllS face more or less downward. e smooth soft material out of which the inner pl of the 'eye shield is made, rovides a comibrte able engagement of the ield with the flesh.
-As excellent results are obtainable from the details disclosed, they may well be followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may be made.
A device of the class described comprisin an elgngated plate of stiff material sha at itsends so as to form eyeshields and shaped at its intermediate portion so as to to hold the device over the eyes of a person form a nose bridge between said eye-shields, during sleep. said shields being concavo-convex, a sheet of In testimony whereof we have hereunto smooth cloth secured to the inner surface of aflixed our signatures.
5 said plate, a sheet of opaque cloth secured to I the outer surface of said plate, and a flexible GEORGE E. TERRY. head gear connected to the ends of said-plate HARRY F. VAN TRUMP.
