PATENT OFFICE.
LIPMAN nnncxna, or AKRON, OHIO.
DIABOLO.
Application filed October 10, 1928. Serial No. 667,608.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LIPMAN BLECKER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Akron, county of Summit, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Diabolo, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to diabolos and the object of the invention is to provide a diabolo which is adapted to be spun by movement of a cord connecting two sticks adapted to be held in the hands. I Another object of the invention is to provide a diabolo adapted to produce sound while spinning.
A further object of the invention 1s to provide a diabolo comprising two chambers provided with apertures through which air may pass during rotation of the diabolo, an apertured partition being provided 1n each chamber having reeds to produce sound.
Another object of the invention is to provide a diabolo in which the reeds are arranged so as to harmonize when sounded together.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a diabolo which may be easily assembled and which is composed of few parts and is of consequent low manufacturing cost.
The above and other objects will be apparent from the following description wherein reference is made to the accompanyin drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings:-
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a diabolo embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of one half of the diabolo.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
- As shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the diabolo body is preferably formed of sheet metal and is provided with an annular V-shaped groove 1 at the center adapted to receive a cord which is secured at each end to a stick held in the hands of the player.
. By means of the sticks the cord may be moved to spin the diabolo and the diabolo may be tossed and caught on the cord and may be tossed from one player to another to provide a game, the object of the game bemg to prevent the diabolo from falling to the ground.
The diabolo is provided with an annular I'lb 2 on each side in which a partition 3 is made a press fit and this partition is provlded with three rectangular apertures 4; in which the reeds 5 are mounted,
The diabolo is provided with a series of apertures 6 adjacent the annular groove 1 and is also provided with a series of a ertliIES 7 through the largest part of the d1abo o.
A cap 8 is provided for each end of the diabolo and is formed of wood, reinforced rubber or other suitable material and a rod 9 extends through the diabolo and partitions 3 through theends 8 and washers 10, the
ends of the rod 9 being riveted over the washers 10 to secure the parts of the diabolo together in assembled relation.
In operation when the diabolo is spinnlng the air enters the apertures 7 which are travelling relatively faster than the apertures 6 and passes through the apertures 4 in the partitions 3 and is discharged through the apertures 6 at the portion of smaller dlameter of the diabolo which are travelling at a slower speed than the apertures 7 due to the difference in the diameter of the diabolo at these points. a
As the air passes through the apertures 4 in the partitions the reeds 5 are vibrated and, as the pivot points 11 of these reeds are arranged at different points a combination of different notes will be produced, it being preferable to so arrange the reeds that the different notes harmonize.
By this arrangement when the diabolo is spinning a musical sound is produced which 1s pleaslng to the ear and the parts used to produce this result do not affect the usual operation of the diabolo.
From the foregoing description it becomes evident that the device is very simple and efiicient in operation, will not easily get out of order, is composed of few parts and is of consequent low manufacturing cost and provides a device which accomplishes the objects described.
WVhile it will be apparent that the illustrated embodiment of my invention hereindisclosed is well calculated to adequately fulfill the objects and advantages primarily stated, it is to be understood that the invention is susceptible to variation, modification and chan e within the spirit and scope of the sub'oinec? claim.
aving thus descrlbed my invention, I claim Adiabolo comprising a hollow, open-ended body member formed or sheet metal and having its diameter a mlmmum substantially midway of its length and mcreaslng toward the ends, said body member having apertures at one side of its center, formed. in portions of said member dlifermg 1n d 1- ameter, an apertured partition between said a ertures, a reed obstructing the aperture 0 the partition, caps exterior? seatin s of 5 ll against and fully closing the en sai body member, and a rod passing axially through said body member enga ing said caps and holding the same in face, said caps exceeding said body memger in diameter and having their inner faces recessed 20 to seat upon the ends of the body member. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand.
LIPMAN BLEOKER.
