GQ HALINKA DOOR LATCH Filed April 24, 1925 w BY T RNEY Patented Cet. 27, 19?..5.I
f NITED STATES GEORGE HALINKA, 0F DET/OIT, MICHIGAN.
Doonl LATCE.
Application filed April 24,1925.
T o all whom it may concer/1i:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HALINKA,'a citizen of theUnited States, and residing at Detroit, county of' Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and lm proved Door Latch, of which the following is a specitcation.
This invention relates to door latches, and relates more particularly to latches dependent upon push and pull members for actuation. y
it is an object ot the invention to provide a door latch that will present a neat appearance when applied on a door, and to further provide means for operating the latch member by a pulling stress applied to a pull member on one side of the door, or
a pushing stress applied to a push member arranged on the opposite side of the door.
lt is another object of the invention to provide means whereby the pull member may be securely locked from movement and at the same time permit free movement ot the latch member by actuation of the push member.
fi. further object is to provide means actuating a latch member by movement of either the push or pull member, each independently of theother.
The above and other objects will be apparent from the following description wherein reference is made to the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a door and door jamb with the invention attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view, taken upon the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and shows more particularlyl the meaiis for operating i the latch member by the mechanism provided with the push member. Figure 3 is a cross sectional view, taken en the line 3 3 of Figure 1 and shows more particularlytlie operating mechanism for actuating V the latch member by the mechanism provided with 4the'pull member, and also discloses means for locking the pull member from movement.
Figure Lisis a cross sectional view, showing how the -pull member may be locked from movement from the interior of the door, in-
' stead of usingV a key lock as shown more particularly in Figure 3.-
`which is adapted to sldably engage the Serial No. 25,507.
In these views, the reference character 1 I designates a fragmentary portion of a door jam spring l'nrging said latch member toward the door jamb.
Referring now more particularly to Figure 2, the means for actuating the latch member 6 from one side o the door comprises a latch dog 11 adaptedcto coact with the projecting lug 11A of the latch member G. Said latch dogll is'pivotally mounted by a. pin 12 on a' lug 13, integral with a housing 14 which is attached to the door by screws 15. Vithin said housing 14 thereV is provided a cylindrical opening 16 and a reduced opening 16A. Disposed within the cylindrical opening 16 there is a push member 17 formed with a large end to Vslidably engage the walls of the opening 16 and having a smaller end projecting through vthe reduced, opening 16A for engagement with the latch'dog 11. The push member 17 is urged outwardly by a spring 18- and is prevented from complete disengagement by a pin 19.
Referring now more particularly to Figure 3, the means for actuating the latch member 6 from the other-side of the door,
cup-shape, having an. integral flange 2()^ for use as a grip member. The pull member i `20 is further provided with an integral cam shaped lug 21 projecting inwardly and terminating in a lug 21A, disposed at substantially a right angle to the face of the cam,
jecting' lu 21B of the latch member'. pull mem er 20 is hingedly mounted on lugs 23 integral with a casing 24, which is formed to substantially meet the contour of the' surface of the pull member 20, and is securely held in a4 mortised portion in the door by screws 25. Said casing 24 is also prositi. i
vided with an integral lug 26 to which is attached one end of a. spring 27, "the other end of said spring being attached to the cam shaped lug 21. Said spring thus serves to resiliently hold the pull member 20 `'substantially Within the concaved portion of the casing 24, and also to return said pull member to its normal position after it has registered slots 30 and 30A provided in the.
casing 24 and in the pull member 20.
In Figure 4 of the drawing there is disclosed an alternative means for locking the pull member 20 from movement, said means comprising a bolt 3l having an integral projecting lug 32 for engagement with the registeredlslots 80 and SOA, said bolt 31 being actuable `by a thumb lever 33 attached thereto by a screw 34.
The latter disclosed locking means is preferably on all except one door, Where hardware of this character is used onautomobiles, as all doors except one may be locked from the nterionof the car, thus eliminating the necessity of using a key, except for one door. n v
It is to be notedthat 'the means provided on either side oit the door for actuating the latch member 6 are wghol'ly independent of each other and further would permit opening of the door f1 n the' push member side, even though it be locked from intrusion from the pull member side.
It is thought that the device is of sufficiently simple nature that no description as to how it operates in use may be required.-
From the foregoing description it becomes evident that lthe device is of simple nature, will not easily 4get out of order and provides means for ,accomplishing ythe objects described.
While it will be apparent that the illustrated embodiment of my invention herein disclosed is Well calculated to adequately fulfill the objectsand advantages primarily stated, it is tobe understood that the invention is susceptible to variation, Amodification and change Within the spirit and scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A door latch comprising a frame, a latch member sliclably mounted therein, a push member and a pull member and means actuating said latch member by actuation of the push or pull member independently.
2. In a device of `the character described, comprising a latch member, a frame for slidably mounting said latch member, Ia .push member and a pull member vfor actuating said latch member, and means locking said pull member against actuation.
In a device of the character described, comprising a latch member, means slidably mounting said latch'member on `-a door, independent means actuating said latch member by a pushing stress applied from one side of said door, and further independent means actuating said latch member by a pulling stress applied ltrom .the opposite side of said door.
4. In a device of the character described, comprising a latch member slidably mounted o n a door and adapted to be actuated b a push member or pull member indepen ently, means locking onecof said actuating members and still permit free movement of the other of said actuating members.
5. In a device orf the character described comprising .a frame, a spring pressed latch member lslidably mounted therein, a latch dog coacting With said latch member, a push member slidably mounted Within a housing and adapted to coact with said latch dog, a -pull member .hingedly mounted and having an integral cam faced lug shdably engaging said latch member, a casing for housing said lpull member and means resiliently 'holding said pull member normally Within sald casing.
I In Witness'whereof I hereunto,- set .my hand.
GEORGE HAL'INKA.
