GAME.
Application filed April 12, 1923. Serial N0.= 631,641.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Toucan A. BAKKETUN, a citizen of the United States, 'residingat Northwood, in the county of lVorth and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Games, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to amusement de vices, particularly to games, and has for its object the provision of a game consisting of a playing surface formed with a circular series of depressions, the device further including a rotary spinner member located at the center of the playing surface for knocking a plurality of balls over the playing surface, the balls being received within said depressions,- the playing surface being inscribed near the depressions with various indicia by means of which a numerical score may be obtained, a dice game maybe played .or fortunes may be told, in addition to spelling out the answers to questions, 1
An importantobject is the provision of a game of this charatcer which is entertaining and amusing to persons of all ages and which may moreover be so constructed, decorated and arranged as to have a mystic appearance and atmosphere which will heighten the attractiveness. 1
An additional object is the provision of a gameof this character which will be simple and inexpensive to manufacture, easy to play, efiicient and durable inservicc and a general improvement in the art.
lVith the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device,
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view,
Figure 3 is a cross section,
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of the playing surface showing the various indicia thereon in greater detail.
Referring more particularly to the drawings I have shown my device as comprising a board or other surface 1.0 which is dished so that the center will be the lowest point. Secured to the edges of this board are side members 11 which give the device a box like appearance and which rest upon a table top or the like for supporting the device in playing position. Secured to the side members is the top 12 which is formed with a circular opening 13 of less diameter than the playing-surface so as to define an overhanging flange 14. Extending across the corners between the board 10 and top 12 are diagonal strips 13.
The playing surface of the board is divided by radial lines 16 inscribed thereon into a plurality of segments 17 and located in these segments is a circular series of depressions or recesses 18 formed in the playing surface. Adjacent the recesses are various indicia to be used in the actual playing of the game, and in the indicia I have illustrated series of letters of the alphabet, numbers, arbitrary symbols, having a secret meaning in accordance with the rules of the game, and also the representation of ordinary playing dice.
Secured upon the underside of the board 10 are depending brackets 19 arranged in crossed relation and forming a bearing for the lower end of a shaft 20 which is journaled through the board and which carries a heavy fiy wheel 21 rotatable within the confines of the brackets. Above the board this shaft carries a turning member 22 and a plurality of radial arms 23. In the present instance the turning member is represented as the head of an oriental or other person, though this detailis simply for on namental purposes and to correspond with the entire decorative scheme which may be I applied to the playing surface and to the top 12. As much or as little ornamentation may be used as preferred depending upon the taste of the individual manufacturer and the intended cost of production In con junction with the playing surface and the turning member, I make use of a plurality of balls 24, preferably 13 in number, though of course some other number might be used to equal advantage.
In playing the game the operator grasps the member 22 between his thumb and forefinger and spins it whereupon the fiy wheel 21 will be set in motion. Owing to the momentum of the fly wheel it is apparent that the turning member or radial arms or kickers carried thereby will rotate for a considerable period of time. The balls 24 may be initially placed upon the playing surface prior 'to the spinning of the turning member or they may be dropped upon the board after the turning member is set in motion, this detail not effecting the operation. As the arms 23 rotate they will of course knock. against, the balls 24; and force them along and upon the playing surface along different lines. The halls will naturally drop into the recesses ls'eventually though of course it is conceivable that some of the balls may not do so. The element of chance thus enters intoxthe playing ofthe game.
For use bynchildren it is intended primarily 'that-'thediulnericalz indicia be used and i that the numberscadjiacent the, recesses occupied byithie-different balls be; added to-. gether for ascertaining the score. In case; the device is'used for ascertaining fortuitous answers to questions.which-may besecretly; written in advance or:- which may. be pro-. pounded orally, the letter indicia, are used, the lettersad jacent' the occupied recesses beingaplaced together .to form words in vanswer: to-the question. The device :may; also be usedinplaying-different gamesof; dice, the dice indicia-iin this instanee-beingused instead of tlieaothers, and it"b.ei-ng-preferable in such casethati a. small number of balls be employed: 'Thedeviceiswalso well adapted for telling fortunes by-ob'serving the various rsecret. symbols: adjacent the occupied recesses and noting the number of times the symbol occurs as; theresult of the play of each player. All the details of the possibility ofv'playing-are not necessary to be explained as" the adaptability and capabilities of the device will be readily apparent to a person ofimagination.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it .wil'l'be apparent that I have thusprovideda simple game device which -will -be extremely attractive, interesting, entertaining, amusing even to the adult, and inst-ructi-verto.children. OW- ing to the simplicity 'of'th'e constructionand the fewness ofvthe parts it apparent that there is little to get out of order so that the device should have a long life and satisfactorily perform all-of its functions.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to, be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as willnot; depart fromthespirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
, Having thus described my invention I claim; v
A game device comprising aboard vdished toward its;-cente-r, and having; secured to its edges, i side 7 members which rest upona su portingv surface to elevate the; board and present a box-like appearance, a: topsecured vto the si-delmembers and; formed; with as; circular opening offless diameter than thew playing, surface of the board, thereby defining/ an overhangingjflan-ge', a series of recessesformed in the playingsurface, the playing surface being inscribed with various indicia, depending brackets in crossed relatlOl'lxSQOllIGCl to the underside of the board, ashaftv having, a bearing in said brackets andpassed through the board at its lowest point, a fiy wheel mounted on the shaft betweenthe brackets 1 andgtheunderside of the, board, a flathead rigid on the-upper end of the: shaft for turning the-same, and plurality of; radial arms formed at the base. of: the head and resting flat onzthe board, in combinationwith a' plurality of balls disposed on said playing surface and adapted to be engaged-by; saidjarms.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.- 7
