v 4 UNITED. STATES 1,561,275 PATENT OFFICE JOHN 0. PAGE, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO STANDARD BRASS CASTING (10., OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, A' CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
SHOWER HEAD.
Application filed January 16, 1924. Serial No. 686,555.
, To all whom z'ztmay concerm,
Be it known that I, JOHN C. PAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, county of Alameda, and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shower Heads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bath-room fittings and particularly pertains to shower heads.
Prior to my invention, showerheads were fitted with removable perforated face plates for the purpose of permitting access to be had to the interior of the head for cleansing l5 purposes. These heads and plateswere of metallic construction permitting the face plate to be threaded or screwed onto the head. Due to this metallic construction the shower heads were diflicult to keepclean and polished, and soon became tarnished under the extreme conditions to which fittings of this character are exposed. On account of the necessity of havlng a threaded or like connection between the face plate and head, it was impractical to construct the parts of porcelain or like non-corrodible material. I
Therefore, it is the principal object of the present invention to generallyimprove devices of the character referred to whereby to provide a generally improved shower head which may be formed of porcelain or like non-corrodible material, the face plate of which shower head is removable to facilitate cleansin of the interior of the fitting. The device is of simple and inexpensive construction, easily cleaned, and neat inappearance.
In carrying out this object I provide a porcelain shower" head, j the upper end of which is clamped to a fitting which may be connected with a shower bracket. The face plate of the shower head is separate from the head proper and is clamped on the end of the latter by means of a stud which is secured at one end to the fitting mentioned and projects downwardly through the face plate to receive a clampmg nut located exteriorly of the face plate.
sume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated by way of. example in the'accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section through a One form which the invention may as shower head embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the accompanymg drawings, 10 indicates a sleeve fitting having an exteriorly threaded end 11 by which it may be connected to a shower bracket. The lower end of this fitting is interiorly threaded for the reception of the threaded end of aclamping nipple 12. The lower end of this nipple is formed with an annular flange 14 which is adapted to engage the underside of an annular shoulder 15 formed interiorly of the upper end of a bell-shaped head member 16. A gasket 17 s interposed between the upper side of the 1 annular shoulder 15 on the head member and a flange 18 formed on the lower end of the sleeve. The nipple 12 is screwed into the sleeve'fitting 10 to compress the gasket 17 between the upper end of the head member 16 and thefla'nge 18 on the fitting 10.
1 The lower or flared end of the head member 16 is formed with a downwardly projecting annular rim 19. Fittin over this end ofthe head member is a per orated face plate 20-, the upper surface of which is formed with an annular channel or groove 21 which is formed adjacent the marginal edge of the face plate to receive the mm 19 of the head member. A gasket 22 is placed between the rim 19 and the surface of the- I groove 21 to render the joint water-tight.
To hold the face plate in proper position on the head member, I provide a stud 23, the upper end of which is threaded in the boss 24 of a spider formed over the mouth of the lower end of theclamping nipple 12.
The lower end of the stud projects through an opening in the face plate to receive a clamping nut 25. By removing this nut the face plate may be removed and access may be had to the interior of the head member for cleansing or other purposes. The boss 24 is shown as hexagonal so as to receive a wrench. y
It is preferred "that the head member and the face plate be formed of porcelain or other non-corrodible material easily kept clean and polished. f To assemble the fitting, the headv member and gasket are arranged on the clamping nipple and the latter is screwed into the sleeve fitting by applying a wrench of the head member. The stud 23 may then'be threaded into the boss 24 of the spider on the clamping nipple, The face plate is then placed over the end of the stud with its channeled edge, which is fitted with a gasket, enga ing the rim on the end of the head memlier. The clamping nut 25 is -then threaded on the stud to' clamp face plate in position. Tightening the stud or bolt 23 will serve not only to com ress the gasket 22 but also the gasket 1 b reason of the fact that the member 16 wil -be thrust upwardly by the pressure applied to the plate 20.
It is obvious that to remove the face plate it is only necessary to remove the clamping nut 25. 7
By my invention, I have provided a neat appearing shower head of inexpensive construction and which may be formed of porcelain or like non-corrodible material so that it may be easily kept clean. I
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention as now known to me, I wish it understood that various changes may be made in its construction without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a shower head the combination with a pipe fitting formed with a flange, a clamping nut adapted to be threaded onto said fitting, a porcelain member forming the bell or funnel of a shower head clamped in place between said nut and flange, a spider on said clamping nut formed with a wrench enaging boss, a perforated disk removably fitted to the base of the porcelain member, a bolt extending through the disk and conthemember clamped between the ni ple andpipe fitting and constituting the unnel or hell of the shower head, a perforated plate or disk also of porcelaln removably fitted to the flared end of the bell or funnelshaped member, a spider formed on the lower end of the clamping nipple, a boss on the spider, and a bolt [connected to the boss and extending through the porcelain disk for clamping the latter to the base of the bell or funnel-shaped member.
4 3. In a shower head the combination with a metal pipe fitting, of ametal ni ple threaded onto the p1pe fitting, a porce ain member between the nipple and pipe fitting vand constituting the funnel or bell of the shower head, a perforated plate or disk also of porcelain removably fitted to the flared end of the bell or funnel-shaped member, a spider formed on the lower end of the nipple, a bolt connected to the spider and extending through the porcelain disk for clamping the latter to the base of the bell or funnel-shaped member, a compressible gasket between the top of the bell or funnel shaped member and the pipe fitting, and a compressible gasket between the base of the bell or funnel-shaped member and the perforated disk whereby when'the bolt is tightened both of said gaskets are compressed to form watertight joints.
