Description

Dec. 29, 1925. 1,567,111
' W. B. BURR LUBRICATING DEVI CE Filed May 19 I '1925 Patented Dec. 29, 1925. 1
UNITED. ST T S WILLIAM B. BURR, OF NORTH PLATTE, NEBRASKA.
. LUBRICATIN'G DEVICE.
Application filed May 19, 1925. Serial No. 31,341.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. BURR, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Platte, in the county of Lincoln and 5 State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricating Devices, of which the following is a spec- ---ification, reference being'had'jco the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to lubricating devices, and particularly to means for-smearing lubricant on articles as, for instance, upon saws and other tools, castings, etc.
. The general object is to provide a device of this character which is very simple, which is very effective and convenient, which includes a felt distributer enclosed .within a easing into which oil is adapted to be poured to cause the felt to absorb the oil, and which is so constructed that oil may be poured into the recess in the felt or defined by the felt so that the lubricator maybe set aside until all the oil has been absorbed, thus'securing an even'distributionof the oil throughout the felt.'=-- I A further object is to provide a device of this character in which the oiled felt isprotected from dust and dirt.
- My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved lubricator with the cap separated from the body;
Figure 2 is a sectional view pf the lubricator with the cap closed;
Figure '3 is a top plan view of the lubricator with the cap removed;
Referring to this drawing), 10 designates an outer casing which may e made of any 40 suitable metal. This casing is formed to provide a bottom 11 and a cover:12 has depending flanges which fit over the u er margin of the casing 10 and provided wit a circumferential flange 13 whereby the cover may be readily handled for removing it or puttinlg it in lace. ispose within the body portion 10 ofthe oiler or lubricator is an annular mass of felt designated 14. This may be made either of one piece of material or of two or more layers of material as desired. The central por tion of the mass 14 of felt is punched out so as to provide a well 15. Above the annular felt mass 14 is a layer 16 of felt which extends over the well 15 and projects above the body 10. v
In the use of this device, the well 15 is more or less filled with oil and the cover closed, whereupon the felt will entirely absorb the oil. The device is then ready for use. It is usedby removing the cover and smearing oil or other lubricant rupon the article to be lubricated by means of the felt hand 16. The device is very useful in saving oil, also labor, and keeps the oil clean. Furthermore, the" device prevents surplus oil froni being smea red over parts which-are not intended to be oiled, which occurs where oil is simply poured upon an object and then smeared over it.
A lubricating device constructed as described and shown has this advantage, that 'when the felt becomes. soaked with oil the well can be refilled and the oil will beletained within the well without leakage, inas} much as the felt top will be full of oil and will form an air-tight cap which will tend to retain the oil within the well without the oil seeping out.
While I have illustrated acertain particular form for this device which is particularly convenient "to manufacture and which has been found to be thorou hly effective, I do not wish to be limited to t is form as it is obvious thatthis'might be changed in many ways without. departing from the spirit of the invention. a
I claim A lubricator of the character described comprising a casing, an annular pad of absorbent materialdisposed in the casing, the central aperture of the pad defining'an oilwell, ,a pad projecting above the casing and extending entirely over this oil well, and a cover adapted to fit upon the casing. ,95
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my f signatur WILLIAM B. BURR.
