Serial No. 17,423.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOWELL M. SIMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eugene, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Collapsible Stoves,
' of which the following is a full, clear, and
exact description.
This invention relates to collapsible stoves, and, particularly, to such stoves adapted for the use of campers, sportsmen and others desiring to cook in the open.
One object of the invention is to provide a' collapsible stove of simple, strong and durable construction, and capable of being collapsed or folded for transportation so that it will occupy very little space, and be, nevertheless, when set up for use, of sufficient size to accommodate the usual camp cooking utensils.
Another object of the invention is to provide a collapsible or foldable stove having side panels to elevate the grid or support for cooking utensils above ground and an end panel carried by the side panels and serving therewith to inclose the fire space beneath the grid upon three sides to cause a good draft on the fire and to prevent scattering of the fire.
The invention consists in a collapsible or foldable stove comprising a grid formed in halves and hinged so as to fold upon itself, one-half having lugs extending beyond said hinge, and the other half having stops for engagement with said lugs whereby the grid when unfolded will be rigidly selfsupporting, side panels hinged to said grid and adapted to support same above the ground, and an end panel formed for engagement with the side panels to hold the latter in adjusted supporting position, the whole being foldable upon itself into compact form and provided with an attached latch member or clasp for maintaining it in folded condition, as I will proceed now to explain and finally claim.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like-parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the stove set up for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stove folded or collapsed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating, upon This applicationfiled. March 21, 1925.
a larger scale, the means for connecting the end panel with the side panels.
The grid is formed in halves having frame members 1 and 2 respectively bent to form the sides and ends of the grid. The ends 3 of the member 1 are provided with hinge sockets 4 and lugs 5, and the ends of the member 2 are provided with hinge pins 6 and stops 7 whereby, when the stove is set up, a self-supportinghinge is formed by the parts 4, 5, 6 and7, the lugs 5resting upon the stops 7.
Hinged to the side portions of the members 1 and 2 by pairs of hinge members 8, 8 and 9, 9 are side panels 10 and 11 respectively rigidly attached to the hinge members and carried thereby.
The hinge members 8 and 9 are similarly extended below the attaching portion of the side panels therewith and are then turned upward to form brace members or uprights 12 adapted for insertion in sockets 13 formed upon the ends of an end panel or brace 14, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3.
It will thus be seen that when the stove is set up for use the grid will be supported above ground on a box-like structure formed by the side panels 10 and 11 and the end panel 15%. In addition to their supporting function these panels enclose the space in which the fire is built below the grid, providing a good draft therefor and preventing scattering of sparks and embers.
hen it is desired to collapse the stove for transportation, the end panel 14 is withdrawn from the brace members or up rights 12 and is positioned upon the side panel 10. In order that it may be maintained in such position the side panel 10 is provided with a lip 15 under which the edge of the end panel 14- may be slipped, said edge being notched as shown at 16 so that the side and end panels may be ositioned compactly edge to edge. This aving been done, the side panel 10, carrying the end panel 14, and the side panel 11. are folded in, underand against the grid, and then the grid is folded upon itself thereby inclosing the side panels and bringing its frame members 1 and 2 into parallelism adjacent each other. A latch 17 is carried by the member 1 and is adapted.
to snap around the member 2, as shown in Fig. 2, to maintain the stove in folded or collapsed condition.
It Will thus be seen that I provide a collapsible stove of very simple, compact and convenient construction, and, in the interest of strength and durability, all joints of the grid are securely welded.
Various changes are contemplated as within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the following claims.
This case is a substitution for my application of the same title, filed April 24, 1923, Serial No. 63 L238, and in which my name appears as Lowell Sims.
hat I claim is:
1. In a collapsible stove. a grid provided with frame members, hinge members carried by said frame members and supporting side panels, one of the hinge members of each side panel being provided with an upright, and an end panel provided at its ends with sockets adapted for separable connection with said uprights for maintaining said side panels in grid supporting position.
2. In a collapsible stove, a grid formed in halves hinged together, panels hinged to the sides of said grid and foldable there under, an end panel having separable connection with said side panels antl' adapted to maintain same in grid supporting position but removable therefrom to permit folding of said side panels against said grid, a lip carried by one of said side panels and by which said end panel is positioned on the side panel when in folded posit-ion, said grid adapted to be folded with said side panels and end panel lying and embraced between its halves, and a clasp cooperating with the halves of said grid for retaining same in folded position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 14; day of March A. D. 1925.
LOlVELL M. SIMS.
