COAT.
Application filed April 11, 1923; Serial No. 631,348.
To all whomz't may-concern.
Be it known-that l',MoRnEoA1-B. FLOR- sHEIM, a citizen of the- United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coats, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wearing apparel, and has particular reference to mens coats and similar garments. The primary object of the invention is the provision of a coat adapted to be worn with detachable back sections, whereby the coat may be provided git? an openwork back, or the usual closed ac z.
Another object of the invention is to pro-- vide a coat having a detachable back section. A further object of the invention is the provision of a coat having an open back, and provided with means for attaching various styles of back sections thereto.
Another object is the provision of a coat having a novel and eiticient ventilating construction, for the back and shoulders.
With these general objects in view, and such others as will be apparent from the description, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the'accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is aback view of a coat constructed in accordance with the invention,
Figure 2 a front view thereof,
Figure 3 an elevation of one form of detachable back section, and
Figure 4 an elevation of another form of detachable back section.
In detail the invention comprises a coat 1 of the usual construction, except that below the shoulder piece 2 at about the height of the armpits, the entireback is cut away, leaving the two side edges 3 connected at the waist line by straps 4 secured thereto and extending across the back, their meeting ends being secured by a button 5, or other suitable fastener, at the center.
At suitably spaced intervals buttons or,
other suitable fastening elements 6 are disposed on the interior of the coat along the lower edge of the shoulder section 2, and down each side edge 3 the coat is equipped at spaced intervals with buttonholes 7, eX tending to a point below the Waist line.
The interiorliningB of the shoulder section when'the coat is worn.
VVhenthe coat is to be 'usedas a fullpieoe garment, the closed back section illustrated in Figure 4: is employed. This consists "of a tailored piece 9 made to conform with the back of the coat and provided at its upper edge with a series of button holes 10 for engagement with the buttons 6, and along each side edge with inwardly disposed buttons 11 for engagement with the buttonholes 7 when applied. Owing to the disposition of the fastening elements, when the piece 9 is attached to the'coat, the appearance will be that of an ordinary coat. .As a matter of design, suitable straps 12 may extend on the outer face of the section from the upper edge to the waist line, on either side of a longitudinal central strap 13 extending the entire length of the piece. The coat straps 4 serve to cover the waist line 14 when in place. a
The chief feature of my invention lies in the use of the detachable openwork back section illustrated in Figure 3. This consists of a tailored piece 15 with an upper edge forming the waist line 16. The side edges of this piece are extended upward in the straps 17, which are provided at their upper ends with button holes 18 for engagement with the coat buttons 6, and at spaced -in- 555 2, provides a flap to cover thebuttons 6.
strap 20 extends the entire length of the section and above the waist line 16, having a buttonhole 21 in its upper end to engage the central coat button 6. Flanking this strap at either side, and midway between the strap and the side edge straps 17, are straps 22 secured at their lower ends to the waist line 16 and provided with buttonholes 23 in their upper ends. Midway between the upper ends of the straps and waistline, is disposed a horizontal crossstrap 24:, buttoned or otherwise suitably secured at its opposite ends to the side straps 17. This construction provides an open grille work efiect at the back of the coat between the shoulder section and the wa1st line, which efliciently ventilates the back and shoulders and is especially desirable for hot weather. It is also attractive in appearance, and provides for a neat exposure of shirting.
It is preferred to employ the same style and material for the detachable back sections, as that used in the coat proper. If desired the buttons and button'holes may be dispensed with and snap fasteners, or any suitable type of fasteningelement employed in their stead.
While I have described and illustrated certain details entering into the construction of this preferred embodiment of the invention, I desire it to be understood that I do not intended to limit the invention to those as" shown, but that any modifications I and changes in details may be made as Will fall Within the scopeof the invention as claimed.
I claim I An outer garment of the conventional coat suit type provided with a rear shoulder portion and a back having an opening extending from the lower edge of the shoulder portion to the bottom edge of the garment, fastening means along the marginal edges of said opening, a back member havingcooperating fastening means for detachably securing said back member to the garment across the lower edge of the shoulder portion and at adjacent side edges from the said shoulder portion to points adjacent the Waist line, and said back memberhaving an open work portion extending from the upper edge to a point adjacent the Waist line.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
