Description

Bday 25, 1926L F. S. OPPENHEIM CONTAINER Filed D ec. 17, 1924 .A'foRNEv Eil terior sides and bottom of the casing` to the height of the. contents, said. liners ltl and contents preferably extending a substantial distance below the top of the casing:r for the purposes Whiclrrvill hereinafter appear.
Where the contents occupying space A (not shown) lies .lush with the top edges of the liners 18, the body portion 19 may bc arranged to abut the contents and where such contents (see 2) comprises radio set having the usual levers and other like control means which project beyond its enclosing cabinet, a novel lorm of top cushioning member 22 may be provided which accommodates the said projecting parts and acts to support and space the set from thc top cover of the casing.
As seen from Figs. 4 and 5, the top cush ioning member 22 is preferably constructed of a single sheet olf corrugated paper board cut to the shaped blank 22L provided -with crease liners 22b und folded to have a recu tangular shaped recessed body portion 23. All the edge portions of member 22 are folded to extend back and then intolded from the front surface 23 01"' portion 23 to forni tubular sections 24, the upstanding Walls 2li of said sections 9A; serving to support and space the contents from the top of the casing.
The sections 24 are preferably made reim tively Wide so as 'to extend over into the acking space to provide a cushioning liller iietween the contents and the top of the caing 10 as shown in Fig. 2.
lin the practice of the invention, the side and end partition liners 18 are placed in position 1n casing l0 and are held in their'respective places by means of the bottorn liner 18 as is clearly shown in Figs. l and 2. Having arranged these liners in position with their body portions 19 spaced inwardly 'from the various Walls ot' the casing, the radio setor other article to be packed' is then lowered into place, the side Wall of the set abutting against the walls or" the liner 18 and being spaced thereby a substantial distance from the walls of the easing l0. lVith these parts in position, the top cushioning member 22 is inserted in the top 'opening of the casing With'the recessed portions 23 thereof arranged to enclose the various projecting; parts, and the section 2li abutting the panel of the set, the member 22 being dimension'ecl to the proper height to fill the' space between the top of the set and the casing. The cover flaps are then folded into position and the casing sealed in any suitable manner as by means ot a strip ot adhesive tape 17.
l'lfhere the articles packed are relatively heavy, or if the shipping box is liable to be subjected to unusual rough handling during' transportatioi'i, the liners 1.8 may be rc- .placed by others constructed similarly to the messes top cushioning member which being pro vided with sections on all edge iortions is relatively stronger. y
roni Figs. l and 2 it is apparent that casing 10 when fitted with liners 18 a top cushioning member 22 each having folded edge sections 20 and respectimly, is thus provided with substantial bracinri means for the inner corner edges ot seid ing which also serve to cushion the con* tents from sudden blows'and contacts il? the box is carelessly and ,roughly handled during transportation. i
It will thus be seen that there is pio. vided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is Well adapted to meet the conditions oi p tactical use.
As various possible embodiments.ini be made ofthe above invention, and as :if ous changes might be made in the einl ment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or show" i. in the eccompsir drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitm ing sense.
Having thus' described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letter Patent l. A packing and shipping bor comprising en outer casing, and a plurality of nonintersecting spacing partitions srrenged abut one another and to form the inner Walls of the box, at least one of said partitions having edge portions thereof folded successively to extend down, outward, up and infolded from the normal. front sorteos ci said partition to form tubular sections, the side Walls of seid sections serving to support and space the partitions -from. the walls.
2. a packing and shipping' hoz, par tition liner made eta single piece o'l corre;
paper board creased folded to form a rectangular shaped body portion having the opposite edge portions thereof vfolded successively to extend down7 outward, up and infolded from the normal iront sur i o do,
Mil
face or? said liner to form tubular sections, thel I side Walls of said sections serving to sup port and specs the liner from interior Wall of.' the bos.
3. In a packing and shipping box, a cushioning member made of a single piece corrugated paper board creased and. folded to form a rectangular shaped body portion. having all the edge portions thereof folded to extend back and intolded `from the normal front surface of said cushioning; inemloer to form tubular sections, the side walls oi said sections serving lo suliport and space the liner from an interior wall oti the box.
'4. A packing and shipping bon comprising an outer casing,r and a plurality oi nonintcrsccting spacing`r partitions arranged to llt;
mames@ abut one another and to form the inner Walls of the box, each artition having edge portions thereof folded successively to extend down` outward, up and infolded from the normal front surface of said artition to form tubular sections7 said sectlons serving as bracing means along the inner corner vedges of the box and adapted to support and space the contents from the outer casing.
5. A packing and shipping box comprising an outer casing and a plurality of nonintersectng cushioning members arranged to abut one another and to form the inner walls of the box, at least one of said members liaving all the edge portions thereof folded to extend back and in'foldcd from the normal front surface of said member to form tubular sections, said sections serving as bracing means which extend completely about the inner corner edges of the box and yadapted to support and space the contents from the adjacent wall of the outer casing. g
6. In a packing and shipping box, a cushioning liner made of a single piece of corruu gated paper board, cut into a blank, creased and folded to have a middle rectangular shaped recessed portion adapted to accommodate projecting parts of the contents of the box, and tubular edge portions adapted to support and space the vliner from the Wall of the box and also to serve as bracing means for the inner corner edges of the casing, said tubular sections being folded successively.l
to extend down, outward, up and inolded from the normal front surface of the liner.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
