Application filed m 14, 1924. Serial No. 713,192.-
This invention relates tooth exercisers,
and it has as one of its objects the provision" of a device for strengthening the teeth, for
increasing thesecurity of the teeth 1n their I sockets, and for stimulating the circulation of blood in the gums whereby the teeth are better nourished. w
With the foregoing objects in view, together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, this 1nvention consists in the construction and arrangement .of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
' Figure 1 is a view of a man employrng my device to exercise his teeth,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of my device which includes hinged members, this view showing in dotted lines the position of one of the 90 hinged members when swun back from the member to which it is hinge and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings for a more detailed description thereof, the numeral 5 in dicates generally my tooth exerciser, which comprises an upper member 6 and a lower member 7. These two members have the configuration similar to a set of teeth and arehinged to each other. A channel-shaped clamp 9 is provided for clamping the members 6 and 7 to each other and comprises a web 10 adapted to fit against the edges of v the members 6 and 7 respectively. Flanges 11 are formed integral with the web 10 and are adapted to engage respectively the upper surface of the member 6 and the lower surface of the member 7. The upper flange 11 is pivoted to the hinged member 6 by means of a pin 12 which is peened on its tail end. The members 6 and 7 are provided with opposing slots and these slots each have a configuration similar to that of a set of teeth.
Each of the members 6 and 7 carries a resilient material 13, such, for example, as a body of rubber, which extends through the slot provided for the purpose. Each body of material 13 is provided at one end with opposing flanges 14. which contact with the inner face of the member by which it is I carried. The material 13 carried by the member 6 extends above the upper surface of the member 6 and the material 13 carried by the member 7 extendsbelow the lower surface of the member 7. The bodies of material 13 are intended to be held tightly between the teeth which bite on the material 13.
The device of my invention includes a handle 15 secured to a' shank 16 which is afiixed to the upper hinged member 6.
In using my device, the members 6 and 7 are placed in the mouth and are positioned so that the body of material 13 in the hinged member 7 rests on the lower set of teeth. The upper set of teeth is then brought into engagement with the body of material 13 carried by the upper hinged member 6.
The bodies of material 13 are then held rigidly between both sets of teeth by a biting force. The device is then held by the handle 15 and force is exerted on the device by pushing inwardly, pulling outwardly, pushing upwardly, and pulling downwardly, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1. This action serves to accomplish the objects of this invention.
This invention has been described, but modifications thereof may be devised without departing from the spirit thereof, and it is to be understood that such modifications come within the scope of this invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A tooth exerciser comprising an upper member, a lower member, said members being hingedly connected to each other, and adapted to be inserted in the mouth and resilient material carried by each of said members and formed to be engaged by a set of teeth, said resilient material projecting above said upper member and below said lower member and being readily removable from said members.
2. A tooth exerciser comprising an upper member, a lower member, said members being hingedly connected to each other, and,
adapted to be inserted in the mouth, resilient material carried by each of said members and formed to be engaged by a set of teeth, said resilientmaterial being readily removable and projecting above said upper member and below said lower member, and
' means for clamping said members to each other.
3.A tooth exerciser comprising an uper member, a lower member, said members 6 eing hingedly connected to each other, and
adapted to be inserted in the mouth, re-
movable resilient material carried by each of said members and formed to be engaged In testimony whereof I have signed my 'name to this ecification.
