This invention relates to brushes wherein a brush block havingv a rearwardly projecting handle is provided on its upper face with a strip of rubber extending longitudinally of and in angular relation to the block so as to constitute a fieXible scraper.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive construction in which the rubber strip is effectually secured to the block in proper angular relation thereto, without the necessity of angularly lrerfing the block to receive and support the basal portion of the strip. Such lerfing of the block not only requires the formation of a longitudinal projection on the block or the use of a block of considerable thickness, but it also necessitates the use of cement or other medium to fasten the strip within the kerf. l/Vhen cement is used it gives way when the block becomes wet, and when nails or pins are employed the rubber, when in service as a scraper, is liable to become ruptured at the nail or pin holes and consequently work loose.

According to my invention the forward face of the block is of concave formation and the basal portion of the strip is rigidly held throughout its length against the con-- cave face by means of a curved clamping plate fixedly held in place by means of headed rods which extend through the brush back to and beyond the rear face thereof and afford an effective connection for the handle of the brush, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a brush block provided in its lower surface with rows of projecting tufts or bristles 11. The forward face of the block is inwardly curved throughout its length, as at 12, and the lower or basal portion, 13, of a strip of a sink of rubber is firmly pressed and held against and throughout the curved surface by means ofa similarly curved clamping plate 14:, so that the portion 15 of the strip, which eX- tends above the block andl constitutes a fleXible scraper, projects forwardly of and in angular relation to the block. The curved plate 141 is provided with spaced apart apertures 15 through which, the block and the interposed rubber strip, extend two wire rods 16 having headed forward ends 17 which bear against the outer concave face of the plate. The rearward portions of these rods converge, as at 18, and terminate in parallel tangs 19 to which the elongated brush handle 20 is applied. The headed ends of the rods clamp the plate firmly against the contiguous face of the basal portion of the rubber strip, which portion thus conforming with the curvature of the opposing face of the block is effectually locked against displacement, and at the same time the upper projecting portion of the strip is set in the desired angular relation to the top of the block, as shown. By this construction the basal portion of the strip is well held and supported throughout its area, and all liability of displacement of the strip when the device is in service, is obviated.

I claim- A device of the character described comprising a block having a concave forward face, a curved clamping plate correspond-- ing in cross-section with the said face and having spaced-apart perforations, a rubber strip interposed between the said plate and the concave face and projecting above and longitudinally of the block, rods extending through the said block, the perforations of the plate and the interposed strip, said rods having at their forward ends heads which bear against the outer surface of the plate in a manner to clamp the strip against and into interlocking relation with the concave face of the block and to position the upprojecting portion of the strip in angular relation to the block, and said rods terminating in tang extensions rearwardly of the block, and a handle on said extensions.
