GEORGE WIII'IEFIELLD CHANCE, GE PHILADELEHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.

sIa'ilOKlhlG- DEVICE.

Application filed. March 18, 1822, serial 310.5%,891.

My invention relates in general to special parts and combinations thereof in a device for the combustion of tobacco and inhalation of vapors, of a type similar in many ways to that shown in my application L5 chamber, with a perforated cap at one end and a plug at the other, to which is connected a mouthpiece.

The plug contains a hole through the same and a spiral is attached to it contained in the barrel, intended for the purpose of pushing material along the barrel.

For a particular description of my inven tion, to illustrate its construction and application, on the drawings, Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section of the cigar-pipe, Figure 2 a side view of the same, Figure 3 an end view of the perforated cap-end, and Figure 4 an end view of the mouthpiece end. Figure 5 shows a plan View of the plug piece looking from the perforated cap end. The barrel 4, preferably has a lining piece 1, inside of the same, so arranged that a small air space is maintained between the inside of the inner tube 1, and the outer tube 4.

This inner tube, with or without the intra-tube spacing, I have used with the de vice and without the same and as it is read ily removable, the whole device may be used with or without it.

There is a plug 7, with a longitudinal hole through it, fitting the mouthpiece end of the tube 4, with a removable mouthpiece 3, twisted or pushed over its outer end. This part 3, is so designed that a space may be maintained between the inner end of the recess in part 3 and the adjacent end of the plug 7. This space serves to arrest moisture and some undesirableessences when used for tobacco smoking.

A spiral 2, is attached to the plug 7 by means of a staple 8, whose prongs or legs bind into the plug 7, but can be removed, if it is desirable to dispense with the spiral. The spiral is designed, for producing a conveying or forwarding or reverse movement Renewed March 3, 1925.-

of any contents of the barrel 4 by actuating it by turning the plug '7 through the attached mouthpiece part 3.

The staple 8, is preferably so adjusted to the plug 7, by means of its prongs, that the hole in the plug will not be blocked, when using a cleaning rod through it, and the plug 7 may be moved to one side of the barrel, when partially removed from it, without entirely removing the spiral 2 from the barrel,

A perforated cap 5, covers the far end of the barrel, away from the mouthpiece end and a band 6, is preferably used atthe other end, but it is not entirely essential to the device and I have at times dispensed with the same, its use being desirable in some instances and in others, it may be considered not so desirable, dependent on the material used for the tube 4.

In using the device for tobacco smoking, the barrel is preferably filled, at the plug end, after removing the same, with fairly dry granular smoking tobacco. The spiral attached to the plug is then inserted in the barrel, and with a screwing motion worked through the tobacco and the plug brought into the barrel, or the tobacco may be poured into the barrel with the spiral in the barrel and the. plug 7 turned aside just outside of the same.

The cigar-pipe is lighted through the large and small holes in the perforated cap,

and generally cleaned through the large.

hole in the cap by a wire rod and by manipulating the spiral in the barrel.

The device may be used as pipe for the inhalation of soothing medicinal vapors from substances placed inside of it, or by using the perforated cap end inserted slightly in one of the nostrils and drawing the vapors up from it. It has been so used and found beneficial for throat and nose irritations.

lVhat I claim is 1. A smoking device, comprising a tube, a hollow spiral inside of the tube attached to a plug with a longitudinal hole through it, together with a mouthpiece with a longitudinal hole through it detachably atlixed to the said plug.

2. A smoking device, comprising a tube, a hollow spiral inside of the tube attached to a plug with a longitudinal hole through it, a. mouthpiece with a longitudinal hole through it detachably affixed to the said plug, together with a conical cap at one end of the tube perforated with small holes surrounding a larger hole.

3. A smoking device, comprising a tube, a. hollow spiral inside of the tube flexibly attached to a plug with a longitudinal hole through it, together with a mouthpiece with a longitudinal hole tl'irough it detachably aliixed to the said plug.

4. A smoking device, comprising a tube, a hollow spiral inside of the tube flexibly attached to a plug the said plug having a longitudinal hole through it, a mouthpiece detachably affixed to the plug having a longitudinal hole through it, and capping the other end of the tube a cap of conical shape with a hole at the far end and surrounding smaller holes.

5. A smoking device, comprising a tube with a tube inside the same, a hollow spiral attached to a longitudinally perforated plug, and a mouthpiece with a longitudinal hole through it remoi 'ably attached to the plug so that a chamber is formed between the two.

(5. A smoking device, comprising a double walled tube with a space between the walls, a hollow spiral attached to a plug with a longitudinal hole through it, a mouthpiece with a longitudinal hole through it detachably attached to the plug, together with a cap on one end of the tube with a conical shaped part having a hole in the same surrounded by smaller holes.

7. A smoking device, comprising a double walled tube with a space between the walls, a hollow spiral flexibly attached to a plugwith a longitudilml hole through it, together with a mouthpiece with a longitudinal hole through it detachably attached to the plug.

8. A smoking device, comprising a double walled tube with a space between the walls, a hollow spiral flexibly attached to a plug with a longitudinal hole through it, a mouthpiece with a longitudinal hole through it detachably attached to the plug, together with a cap on one end of the tube of a rounded shape, the cap being perforated.

9. A smoking device, comprising a double walled tube with a space between the walls, a hollow spiral flexibly attached to a plug with a longitudinal hole through it, a mouthpiece with a longitudinal hole through it detachably attached to the plug so that there is a space or pocket between the end of the plug and the inside of the mouthpiece, together with a cap covering one end oi the tube of a conical shape with perforations in the same.
