GEORGE P. STEINBAGH, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.-
IMPROVEMENT lN CHILDRENS WALKlNG=CHAIR$.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,976, dated February 16, 1875; application filed December 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. STEIN- BAOH, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Walking- Ohairs, of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to a childs chair, which, owing to the peculiar construction thereof, has the distinguishing features of a walking, playing, and commode chair, and which can be adjusted in height to suit the size of the child by means of screws or other lengthening devices attached to. the legs of the chair, and to which devices suitable rollers or casters are connected to allow of the movement of said chair upon the floor of the nursery by the efforts of the child to walk while secured in a ring or opening in the body of the device or chair aforesaid.
1n the further description of my invention which follows, due reference must be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is an isometrical view of my improved chair; and Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5, views of portions of the invention on an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts of-the invention in all the figures.
A is the body of the device, and B B the legs of the same The body A is slotted, the slot being of a circular form, at the front end thereof, and at the back fitted with a removable sliding piece, a, the position of which within the said slot regulates the length of the opening in the body A, in which the child is confined.
The legs B extend from the body A, to which they are secured, and are provided with some lengthening devices, preferably the screws I), inserted in the lower ends thereof, and furnished with the lock-nuts b, to prevent their being turned, except when found necessary. The outer ends of the screws are fitted with rollers or casters 0, upon which the chair rests.
O is a perforated seat, suspended by cords or chains from the body A, and adapted to have secured, in a removable manner, an earthenware or sheet'metal vessel, d, for obvious uses.
When it is desired to use the device as a walking-chair, the seat 0 is removed, and the height of the body regulated to suit the waist of the child by means of the screws 22. After the child is placed in the chair the sliding piece a is inserted in the slot to such a depth as will give proper support to the child, in which position it is held by means of the sliding bolt 6 and toothed rack f. The child-thus held in an upright position, in endeavoring to walk, causes the device to roll about the floor of the nursery.
By replacing the seat 0 the device can be used as a playing-chair, the body A answering the purpose of a table, upon which toys may be placed, the rail and side pieces preventing their falling off the same.
The device is well adapted for use as a commode, having all the distinctive features thereof, the only change in the parts found necessary being the attachment of the vessel (1 and the removal of the lid g. My invention may be upholstered wherever it comes in contact with the person of the child, and provided with cushions, and may be elaborately decorated to present a handsome appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States. is-
l. Acombined childs walking, playing, and commode chair, provided with the height-adjusting, locking, and traveling devices I), b, and c, substantially as herein specified.
2. In a childs chair, the combination of the body A, seat 0, having grooved ways, removable vessel d, and lid 9, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. 7
3. The sliding piece a, fitted with the bolt 6, in combination with the slotted body A, provided with the toothed rack f, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 30th day of December,
GEO. P. STEINBAOH. Witnesses:
W. W. WHARTon, Gno. MCGAFFRAY.
