rocxn'r CONTAINER.
Application med Gctober 9, 1925. Serial No. 561,585.
`This invention apprtains to pocket receptacleswhich are particularly adapted as auxiliary containers for carbide, but which are susceptible for other uses, such las for the reception of tobacco and tobacco users appliances. v f
The primary object of the present invenis toprovide a container in which the collapsin thereof is precluded and in which a nov slidin cover is incorporated'for facilitating the ispensing of the material contained therein, the cover being incorporated with the body of the container in such a manner that accidental displacement thereof is prevented.
A further object. of the invention is the provision of a container having an open top for the reception of lan auxiliaryvcontainer which forms a brace for the upper end of the body to prevent collapsing thereof and novel overlapping sliding covers for the auxiliary container and the body of said container. v
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel container of the above character which will be durable and efficient in useone that will be simple and easyA to manufacture and one which can be'placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.'
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated iii/'the accompanyin drawings, in which drawings:
igure 1 is a side elevation of the improved container, f
Figure 2 is a central vertical section through the same,
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the container illustrating the novel coverings,
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse section through the container,
Figurel 5 is a detail section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3 illustrating the novel means of mounting thecovers in place,
Figure I6 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating a modified form of the novel container.
Referring to the drawings in detail, where- -in similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates the improved container, which comprises a body 10 formed of sheet metal. The body 10 can be formed in the conventional way and can be of` an arcuate shape in cross section in order to permit the convenient carrying Aof the container in the hip pocket `of the user. However, the side walls `1l of the body 10 are provided with struck in ribs 12 asl clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawings in order to prevent the collapsing of the body.
The upper end of the body is left open and in accordance with this invention an auX- iliary top 14 is slipped into said open end and frictionally held in place. This auX- iliary top 14 is shaped 4to snugly it within the upper end of the body 10 as heretobefore stated and includes the side walls 15 and the end` walls 16. The side walls 15 and one end wall 16 supports a false bottom 17.
This wall 17 terminates short of one end wall 16 and supports a partition or aux lbody 10. Itis preferred to construct the entire top 14 out of a single piece of sheet metal and press the same into the -desired shape. The upper edgev vof the side and end walls 15 and 16 are bent at right? angles to provide an outwardly extending ange 21 which is in turn bent upwardly -to define an overhanging iange 22. These iian es 21 and forthe reception of the overlapping slide .22 form a guide 23 entirely aroun the same covers 24 and 25. It is to bealso no ted at this point that the overhanging flange 22 has its inner edge rolled inwardly to provide a bead 26 in order to eliminate the eX- tending of sharp edges and to provide a reinforcing' and retaining member for the said top. It is obvious -that when the top is in place that the collapsing of the upper end l of the top is practically eliminated.
The covers 24 and 25 are adapted to slide .one aoove the other and are of a cncavoconvex shape in cross section andl conformto the general configuration of the body.
The edges of the said covers are provided with struck up intermeshing beads 27 and i the bead 26 is adapted to engage the said lbeads 27 in order to prevent displacement of the said covers. Each of the covers adjacent is obviousfrom the constrution ofthe top,A
that the covers 24 and 25` are prevented from being displaced .therefrom and that access it'is desired to fill the body the -ntire'top 14 can be removed, or the bodycan be filled.l
" I 'the body terminating short of one end therei `by manipulating the cover 25;-
When the container is beingused^ asy al tobacco users appliance the main body can be filled with tobacco, While the auxiliary compartment 19 can be used vforthe 'recepvtion of matches, pipe cleaners and, the like. l yWhen the container is being .used as an accessory for miners, the main body-'Canbe .used for the receptlon of carbide, as here- 'tobefore stated, and the compartment 19 for the reception of various arts of the carbide lamp, matches and the li e. l 5 v If preferred Athe top 14 can be eliminated and the flanges 2l and 22 formed directly on the upper edge of the walls l1 vof the body as clearly shown in' Figure -6 of the drawings. 'In this instance the cove'rs 24 and 25 are held in place in the same-I manner and aire precluded from jumping out of place by the retaining bead 26 formed on the flange 22' and the struck up beads 27 on ao the covers 24 and 2 5. From the foregoing description, it` can be selen that a novel container has been provided of an exceptionally simple and durable character', which can be effectively used for the purpose intended.
i Changes indetail's may be madey without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention, but: l
Wliat I claim as new is:
1. In a" device of the class described, a body,`right angularly disposed flanges ,eX tending outwardly of the side Awalls of the body, overhanging flanges carried by they right angularly extending anges in. spaced relation thereto defining'a guide way, a locking bead formed on the free edge'of said overhanging flange, and apair of independ ent slidable covers mounted in said guidel way in overlapping relation, and upstruck` overhanging beads formed on said covers' ad- .Jac'ent tothe outer edges "thereof adapted toK 'be engaged' by saidJ locking bead.
` 2: a lnew article of manufacture, a top Efo'r ifpooket containers including a body of and apartition connected'withA the-side Walls` and with-the bottom wall defining an covers mounted in said guide.v
' 3. 'A pocket' container for'the purpose 'i specified comprising a sheetmetal body having an'open end, a removable top slidably iand snugly fitted within the open end of the container for preventin the collapsing f thereof, the top being provi ed with an auxiliary compartment terminating short of one end thereof dening anv opening, for the body, a guideway formed-around the up- ^per edge of the top, and independent sliding covers arranged in overlapping relation carried by said guideway for theauxiliary compartment and saidopening. Y. 4. As a new article of manufacture, a top for pocket containersv including a body adapted to snugly fit within the open end of a container including side'and end walls, a bottom wall carriedby the lower end of the body terminating short of loneend thereof and a partition connected with the side Walls and with the bottom wall defining an opening and a compartment, a right an-,' gularly extending outwardly disposed flange. formed on the upper edge of the body, an, fla-nge carriedby the rig-ht an gularly extending flan e having a reinforcing bead on the free e ge thereof, and overlapping sliding covers mounted between the overhanging and the right angularly extending flange, the sliding covers havingv up' struck interlocking ribs formed thereon adapted to engage said bead.
In` testimony whereof I. affix my signature.
