Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH R. PERRY, OF PORT CLINTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
JOINT FOR UNITING A MORTISING-CHISEL TO ITS MANDREL.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,020, dated November 4, 1856.i
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Jos. R. PERRY, of the borough of Port Clinton, county of Schuylkill, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Mode of Mortising; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear and eXact description of the construction and operation of the niachine, in which- Figure l is a side elevation. A is a cast iron frame, which is intendedto be bolted to a bench, as shown, by the bolts B B. rIhere are two rods C, C, passing down in front of said frame, which support and on which slides a crosshead D. The cross head is moved up and down in mortising by a lever E, which accommodates itself to the motion by rolling and sliding on said cross head, at F. The lever is fastened at one end only, by a pin marked G. The cross head is so made that a circular shaped end runs down below the lever, and a hole being bored out of it another circular piece is fitted into said hole, into which the taper hole for receiving the chisel is made and turned by a small spring. It is the end running down, I the piece fitted into it and K the spring which turns the chisel, or reverses it. The piece holding the chisel is held in its place as follows: A small groove is turned out of the piece about inch deep and in. long or wide and a corresponding crease turned out of the other part. The piece then is inserted and a composition poured into said crease through a small hole in the side of the cross head made for that purpose, thus forming a complete swivel. A small notch filed out of the cross head admits the spring, in reversing it. L is a guide to regulate the face of piece to be mortised, and may be moved up and down, or in and out, by a slot in the frame and also a corresponding slot in the guide. The guide is held to its place by a small bolt and thumbscrew, marked M. N, shows a piece of stulf in a position for mortising, being an end view of the same. rIhe lever E, is constructed so that any length of lever may be used by attaching it with a bolt through a hole for that purpose or for applying apitman when used with a foot or treadle. F ig. 2 represents a front elevation of the same, the same letters referring to the same parts in both views, but showing more distinctly the construction of guide and cross head. The cross head and lever is operated upon and sustained, by a spiral spring moving on one of the rods as shown, at letter O, and where a treadle is intended to be used must be strong enough to draw back the chisel. A small rod passes through the lugs of the frame and is held by a thumbscrew at P, which rod is lowered or raised to suit width of stuff. rIhe guide at L, is faced with a piece of wood driven into' a dovetail cast on said guide, and represented by the red color. The lever is held to its place on the crosshead by a small plate and screw, as shown by the letter R in both elevations and is just loose enough to allow the necessary movement of the lever.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Securing the revolving chisel-socket J, to the cross head or cap H by grooving both in the manner described and fitting the annular space thus creased with a metallic composition as herein specified.
. JOS. R. PERRY.
