T his invention relates to a compress adapted to carry a medicine, drug or chemical and to be secured by bandagingor the like to an affected part of the body to hold the medicine upon or over said affected part for relieving or removing pain or soreness. I

One object of the invention is to provide a compress .of the character described embodying a novel and improved construction whereby the vapors from the medicine, etc., are prevented from escaping from the coinpress and are caused to penetrate the skin so that the maximum healing power of the medicine is obtained.

@ther objects are to provide such a compress comprising a novel combination and arrangement of layers of materials one of which is adapted to receive the medicine and certain of the others of which may be utilized to cover the medicine to modify its effect upon the body; to thus provide 'a compress including a main portion to receive a medicine and a plurality of sheets of gauze or the like secured at one end to one end of said main portion whereby said compress is book-like in formation and one or more of sheets of gauze selectively may be arranged over the medicine to modify its effect; to provide a compress including a layer or layers of moisture-proof. and heat-insulating material to prevent vapors from the medicine from escaping from the compress and to retain the heat beneath the compress when it is in position on the body, and to obtain other results and advantages as may be brought out by the following description.

, Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention, the reference character A designates the main portion of the compress. which .is shown as comprising a backing layerlof material 1, which is pref erably a closely wovenfabric, a layer of chamo s f2 and a layer of moisture-proof and insulating material .3 disposed between said layers land 2. The layers 1, 2 and v3 are of substantially the same size except that the layer l .is somewhat longer than the other two layers. These layers 1, 2 and 3 are shown as secured together by a marginal line of stitching 4;. i

.The exposed surface of the chamois 2 is adapted to receive the medicine, and ,preferably the medicine is applied in .a plurality of spaced spots, as indicated at 6.. The sur face of the chamois may be provided with .a plurality of indications representing the position at which the medicine is to be applied.

A plurality of layers of ,porous material 7, preferably gauze, are secured upon; the main portion A for :the purpose of covering the medicine on the chamois 2 to modify the effect of the medicine. To secure the layers 7 of gauze to the main portion A, the projecting end 8 of the backing layer 1 is folded and returned upon the chamois layer 2 with one end of each of the layers 7 between itself and the chamois, as clearly shown in Figures 2 and i. A line of stitching 10 is provided for securing the layers 7 i to the main portion A. It will be observed that the compress is book-like in formation, the layers 7 of gauze corresponding to the leaves of a book.

In use of the compress, the medicine 6 is applied to the chamois as indicated by Figure 2 and the compress secured to the affected part of the body with the medicine 6 next to the skin, by any suitable means such as bandaging. Ifthe maximum effect of the medicine is desired all of the layers of gauze 7 are folded on the backing layer, while if it is desired to modify the effect of the medicine, one or more layers 7 may be placed over the medicine in accordance with the effect desired. That'is, that if it is desired to minimize the effect of the medicine to the greatest extent all of the layers 7 would be positioned over the medicine, while if it was desired to only slightly modify the effect of the medicine one layer 7' would be arranged over the chamois. The book-like formation of the compress provides for easy handling and manipulation of the sheets 7 and the securing of the sheets to the main portion of the compress effectively holds them in the desired position. At the same time, when the sheets 7 are not arranged over the chamois, they are in an out-of-the-vvay position at the back of the compress.

The moisture and heat-insulating sheet 3 prevents the vapor of the medicine from escaping from the compress and holds the heat beneath the compress, so that a maximum healing effect of the medicine is obtained, while the chamois 2 provides a yielding, soft and close contact with the body, assists in retaining heat and effectively absorbs the medicine to hold it in contact With the body. The medicine only slowly permeates the chamois so that escape of the medicine due to vaporization or soaking or spreading thereof into the compress is retarded and the medicine is retained at substantially its full strength for a long period of time.

In some cases it may be desirable to have the sheet 3 removable for changing or other purposes, and to permit this the sheets 1 and 2 may be secured together in the form of an envelope with one corresponding edge of each sheet unconnected so that the sheet 3 can he slipped in or out between them.

It will be understood that many modifications and changes can be made in the detail construction of the compress and other kinds of material utilized, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Therefore, I do not desire to be understood as restricting myself except as required by the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.

Having thus described the invention, What I claim is:

1. A surgical compress comprising a main portion to receive a medicine on one side,

and a plurality of sheets of porous material each secured at one edge to one end of said main portion, whereby one or more of said sheets selectively may be placed over the medicine on said main portion or folded over the opposite side of the main portion to per mit modification of the action of said medicine when the compress is applied to the body. 1

2. A surgical compress comprising a main portion having a backing sheet one end of which is folded or returned over a portion of the front of the main portion, and a plu rality of layers of porous material secured at one edge betweensaid returned portion of said backing sheet and the front side of said main portion selectively to cover said front side or be folded over the backing sheet to permit modification of the action of said medicine when the compress is applied to the body.
