SANITARY BELT.

Application filed February 4, 1926. Serial No. 85,896.

This invention relates to sanitary belts, such as are formed by an elastic waist band and non-flexible tabs which depend therefrom at the front and rear portions thereof.

One object of'the invention is to insure the entire elasticity of the belt throughout its length, which does not obtain in instances where the non-elastic tabs are secured to the waist band across the width thereof.

Another object of the invention is to prevent the distortion or the wrinkling of the waist band, to the discomfort of the wearer, by mainly sustaining the strains placed on the tab from a limited inelastic part of the band that is formed by whipstitching together the abutted ends of such band.

Other obiects will appear from the anneXed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view partly broken illustrating my improvement in connection with a waist band that is made of a single piece of elastic webbing;

Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the belt constructed in accordance with my improvement in the instance where such belt is V-shaped at the front and rear, and therefore neces arily made of two separate sections of elastic webbing, the latter being broken away, and

Figure 3 is a rear view of the front portion of the belt shown at Figure 1.

Similar numerals of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.

Referring to Figures 1 and 3, 1 is a waist band made of elastic webbing, whose edges are a'butted at the front of the device and secured together by a vertical row of whipstiches 2.

3 is a rear non-elastic fabric tab which depends from the band 1 and whose upper edge overlaps the lower edge of the band and is secured thereto by a horizontal row of whipstitches 4.

5 is a non-elastic fabric tab depending from the band 1. and having its upper edge overlapping the lower edge of the band and secured thereto by a horizontal row of whipstitches 6, which row intersects at a right angle the lower end of the row of whipstitches 2, at the central portion of the row 6.

The chief strains upon the waist band are at the front portion, and will be chiefly directed in a vertical plane and will be mainly sustained'by the vertical row of whipstitches 2, and the peculiar way of securing this tab 5 to the waist band, in the manner above described, precludes all likelihood of the tab tearing away from the lower edge of the band.

Moreover, since the whipstitches 2 occupy a very limited portion of the band, practically the elasticity of the entire area of the latter can be utilized. and since the row of stitches 2 forms a rigid inelastic bar not only will this bar sustain most of the strains upon the tab, but also the waist band will not become unduly distorted and wrinkled so as to cause discomfort to the person of the wearer, and since the rear tab 3 is not subjected to severe strains, the horizontal row of whipstitches 4 which. secures the overlapping top edge of this tab to the lower edge of the waistband is not at all likely to tear loose.

Referring to Figure 2, a construction is shown which is cut to a shallow V-shape at the front and rear in order to better fit the person of the wearer, this style of belt being sometimes preferred, and such construction is necessarily composed of elastic webhing sections 7 and 8 Whose edges are abutted at the rear and front portions of the waist band and secured together by vertical rows of whipstitching 9, 10, and the rear and front tabs are secured in position by overlapping the upper edges thereof against the lower edge portions of the band, and then securing the tabs by horizontal rows of whipstitching 11, 12, which intersect at their central portions the rows of vertical whipstitches 9, 10.

It will therefore be noted that the manner of securing the tabs to any seamed portion of the waist band is precisely the same in both instances while the advantages obtaining with respect to the construction shown at Figure 1 are equally applicable to the construction shown at Figure 2.
