Renewed August 'lhe invention in question relates to a smiling doll having the advantage compared with dolls known hitherto that, by a pressure on the body ofthe doll, the face can vlo be distorted in such a way that it will look as if the doll were smiling. Owing to the particular construction of the doll the force acting on the face can be caused to bear upon different positions of the face, so that the smile. will comform thoroughly with the appearance of the face.

1 is an india-rubber container, which can be pumped full of air until a suitable. pressure is reached, and 2 is a wrapper of linen or another material, which can limit the expansion of the rubber-container 1. The wrapper 9. has on the sides of the head two openings 3, Fig. 1, through which the container' can be pressed outward. Around the head is laid an elastic band 4, Figs. 2-3; such as to 4cover the holes 3 in the wrapper 2. This band serves the purpose of limiting and regulating the expansion of the container 1 through the holes By pressing on the body of the doll the air will be driven up into its head and tend to expand it. rl`his expansion, however, cannot take place in the portions directly covered by the wrapper 2; consequently the whole expansion will take place through the holes 3, causing a great sidewise or lateral expansion of the head. This movement is used to produce smiles.

In order to transfer such movement to the face of the doll, which is here shown as printed or otherwise indicated on an extensi ble mask 5 applied to the head of the doll, Figs. 3-4, a band 6, Figs. 2-4, is placed around theI head so as to overlie the elastic band 4. The band 6 is 'fastened at the back or'l the head,.but is otherwise loose. The ends of the band 6 are fastened inside the mask 5 at the corners of the mouth. By pressure on the body of the doll its head will undergo a sidewise or lateral expansion, which will cause the band 6 to be straightened, and its ends to pull on the corners of the mouth, by which the mouth will be lengthened. and the cheeks folded as by a naturally smiling face. e o

l claim as myi invention:

1. A doll, comprising an expansible nonmetallic head; an extensible face mask overlying said head; and an inextensible connect ing member between the head and the mask to transmit the expansion of the former to 'the latter to exert "a tractive stretching act-ion on the same and thereby change the expression ot' the mask.

2. A doll, comprising an expansible head; an extensible face mask overlying the head; and an inextensible band connected'at its ends to the sides of Athe mask, and intermediateits ends to the head, to transmit the expansion of the head to the mask to change the expression thereof.

3. A doll, comprising an expansible nonmetallic head; a face mask .overlying said head and embodying an extensible mouth portion; and means for transmitting the expansion movement of the head to said extensible mouth portion to exert a tactive stretching vaction on the same and thereby change the expression of the mask.

4. A doll, according to claim 3, in which the tral'isn'iitting means consists of a band which is connected at its ends to the corners of the mouth and intermediate its ends to the head. 3

5. A doll, according lo claim Il, in which the transmitting means consists of a band which-passes around thehead and is' connected at its center to the back ot' said head and at its ends to the corners of the mouth.

G. A doll, comprising an expansible nonmetallie head; a l'ace mask overlying the head and having an extensible mouth portion; and means for exertingan outward pull in opposite directions upon the corners of said mouth portion when lthe head is ex-` panded, to stretch the mouth and thereby change the expression of the mask.

7. A doll, comprising an expans'ible head; an inextensible covering enclosing the same but having openings through which the underlying exposed portions of the head are caused to project when the head is expanded; an extensible face mask overlying the front part of said covering; and'means for transmitting the projecting movement of said ex- 105 posed portions to said mask to stretch the same and thereby change its expression.`
