IMPROVEMENT IN TOV PAISTOLS.

S peciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. l 62,258, dated April 20, 1875; application filed March 13, 1875.

To all whom t may concern:

Beit known that I, AUGUSTUS E. TAYLOR, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Pistols, of which the following is a specih'cation:

My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a toy pistol, as Will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this speciiieation, andin Which- Figure l is a side elevation of my toy pistol, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.

A represents the handle.; B, the chamber; and C, the barrel, of my toy pistol. D is the hammer, operated, by means of the trigger E and springs a a, in the usual man ner. In the front end of the chamber B is made a slot, b, for the insertion of the paper cap generally used in toy pistols. From this slot backward through the chamber or cylinder B passes a plunger, d, which is drawn backward by means of a spiral spring, e, and is operated to explode the cap by the hammer D. Ihe front end of the plunger d is provided with a head, d', as shown. The cylinder B is surrounded by a jacket or casing, G, made of any suitable thin sheet metal, and iitting between shoulders at the front and rear ends of the cylinder. In

this casing is a slot corresponding with the slot b in the cylinder, and through which the cap is inserted into said slot or cavity when the casing is turned one-halt' a revolution, covering the slot or cavity b, and confining the cap therein.

When the pistol is cocked the plunger is pushed back by the spiral spring e, the cap put in place, and the hammer D let down easily, the plunger pressing against the cap and holding it in position until the casing G is revolved in place. By now cooking the pistol it can be tired, giving a much louder report than without the casing.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a toy pistol, the combination of the cylinder B, provided with the slot or cavity b, the plunger d, spring e, and hammer D, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. In a toy pistol, the slotted revolving jacket or casing Gr, in combination with the cylinder' B, plunger d, and hammer D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set fort-h.
