:xccording to the present ii'ivention a per torated metal cup is inserted into the transversely divisil'ile silencer body, into which it fits at or near the inlet end, against which cup the bag containing the strip metal or other lilling is packed. The said. shell may be secured in position by means of a tlange ei'itering between the opposing rims or flanges ol the separate parts of the silencer body in the manner described in the specification of Patent No. 1,575,657. The bagcan thus be of greater capacity than that previously used. A large portion of the surface of the filling bag is thus in contact with the interior of the silencer body, and the gases enter and traverse the filling longitudinally,

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States is 1.
