DISPLAY CHEST FOR SILVERWARE.

My invention relates to cases or chests For displaying and holding pieces of silverware and similar articles, and has for its object to provide a novel and improved chest of this character which is capable of displaying a large number of pieces of silverware to the best advantage, and when closed occupies but a small amount of space.

The several features of the invention, whereby the above-mentioned and other objects may be attained, will be clearly understood from the following description and accompanying drawings. in which:

Figure 1 is a view in perspective of achest for silverware, the cover of the chest being shown in open position, embodying the features of the invention in their preferred form;

Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing the chestclosed; and

Fig. 3 is a similar view but showing the chest open.

Thee-hostillustrated in the drawingscis provided with a box-like body having a bottom wall 2, end walls 4, a front wall 6 and a rear wall 8. The rear wall 8 extends a distance above the upper edges of. the end and front walls. and a cover 10 is hinged upon the upper edge of this rear wall, and when opened is held in vertical position by a suitable flexible strip 12. The cover is provided with a top Wall 13 and downwardly projecting marginal walls 14. A silverware support or rack 16 is secured on the inner side of the top wall of the cover and is provided with suitably arranged holders 18 for pieces" of silverware.

A support or rack 20 for silverware has one edge hinged by means of a flexible strip 22 to the inner side of the upper edge of the .front wall 6. The end walls of the body are provided with suitable rabbeted grooves 24 for receiving the support when the latter is swung inwardly and downwardly into horizontal position. This hinged connection also permits the su iport 20 to be swung outwardly so as to position it in a slightly declining plane, the engagement of the rear margin of the under side of the support with the upper edge of the front wall of the chest body limiting this outward movement of the support and firmly holding it in powardly upon the upper edges of the end walls 4. The support 28 is provided with upstanding end walls 32 and front and rear walls 34 and 36, respectively. When this support 28 is, swung inwardly upon the upper edges of the front and end walls of the chest body. the rear wall36 is arranged adjacent the inner side of the projecting portion of the rear wall 8 of the body of the chest. the upper edges of said upstanding wallsot said support are arranged in the plane of the upper edge of said rear wall 8. and the outer surfaces of the end and front walls of said support are arranged substantially flush with the outer surfaces of the end and front walls of the chest body.

The front wall 34 of the support 28, and the front wall 6 of the body of the chest have cooperating fastening devices 38 for detachably securing said support to the body of the chest. When the cover 10 is swung down the edges of its front and end marginal walls rest upon the upper edges of the corresponding walls of the support 28, and thus the cover completely covers said support. A suitable lock 40 is mounted on the outer sides of the front walls of the cover and the support 28 so as to permit the chest to be locked when closed. It will be apparent when the cover is thus looked that it will be impossible to raise the support 28 from the body of the chest even though the fasteners 38 are unlatched.

With this construction it will be apparent that when the chest is open the four supports or racks 16, 42, 20 and 28 together provide an uninterrupted field of vision for the display of the silverware, and the several supports are arranged at suitable angles with relation to one another as to display the silverware to the best advantage. Itwill also be apparent that the chest may be easily closed and locked, and when closed takes up but a small amount of space which, of course, is advantageous both for thedealer and the consumer.

As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my {invention permits various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. A display chest for pieces of silverware having, in combination, a. body having end walls and front and rear walls with the rear wall extending a distance above the end and front walls, a support for silverware having one edge hinged to the upper edge of said front wall to permit it to be swung within said walls of the chest body, and to permit it to be swung outwardly from said body,

and a second support for silverware having one edge hingedto the outer edge of said first-mentioned support so as to permit it to be swung outwardly therefrom and when the first-mentioned su port is in its inner position to be swung ownwardly upon the upper edges of said end and front walls, and having upstanding walls of proper height so that their upper edges are positioned in substantially the plane of the upper edge of said rear wall, both of said sup ports having holders for silverware thereon which are arranged on the top sides thereof when said supportsare in their outer positions. v

A display chest for pieces of silverware having, in combination, a body having end walls and front and rear walls, a" support for silverware having one edge hinged to the upper edge of said frontwall to permit it to be swung inwardly into substantially horizontal position and to permit it to be swung outwardly from said body, and a second support for silverware having one edge hinged to the outer edge of said firstmentioned support so as to permit it to be swung downwardly upon the upper edges of said end and front walls when the firstmentioned support is in closed position, and having upstanding front, rear and end walls, and a cover adapted to extend over the upper edges of said upstanding walls,

5. A display chest for pieces of silverware having, in combination, a body having end walls and front and rear walls with the rear wall extending a distance above the end and front walls, a-support for silverware having one edge hinged to the upper edge of said front Wall to permit it to be swung inwardly into substantially horizontal position and to permit it to be swung outwardly from said body, a second support for silverware having one edge hinged to the outer edge of said first-mentioned support so as to permit it to be swung outwardly therefrom and when the first-mentioned support is in its inner position to permit it to be swung downwardly upon the upper edges of said end and front walls, and having upstanding walls of suitableheight to position their upper edges in substantially the plane of the upper edge of said rear wall, and a support for silverware adapted to rest upon the bottom wall of said body when the chest is closed, and adapted to be positioned when the chest is open in transversely inclined position with its forward edge resting upon said bottom wall and its rear edge resting against the inner side of said rear wall.

6. A display chest for pieces of silverware having, in combination, a body having front and rear walls, and a bottom wall having upstanding projections in proximity to said front and rear walls, respectively, a support for pieces of silverware adapted to rest in substantially horizontal position upon said projections, and adapted to be arranged ininclined position with its forward edge abutting the rear side of said forward projection, and with its rear edge resting 45 against said rear wall.
