Description

P. .I. HAR DY.
Balusters.
N0.163,993 Patentedlune1,l875.
WITNE55E5= W m N 1 f NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PIERRE J. HARDY, OFNEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALUSTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 163,993, dated J une 1, 1875 application filed February 25, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PIERRE J. HARDY, of New York city, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Balusters; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved balusters. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same upon line as or of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section upon line 2 z of same figure.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to enable metal balusters, newel-posts, 850., to be caused, in whole or in part, to resemble solid wood 5 to which end it consists, as a new article of manufacture, in a metal baluster having a portion or the whole of its exposed surface covered with wood veneer, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents the base, B the shaft, and (J the capital, of a baluster, which is constructed of metal, and has any desired form of exterior.
The base and capital A and C, respectively, are preferably polished and lacquered, or, if desired, are painted, while the shaftD is covered by thin sheets, D, of hard wood, which latter is cemented to the metal, and at the corners of said shaft the impinging edges of said veneer are cemented together, after which its exterior surface is dressed and finished as though solid wood.
The construction described enables balus ters to combine the strength and durability of metal with the finish of wood, and, further,
permits fine effects to be produced by contrasting the natural grain of wood with either polished or painted metal.
When rendered necessary from accident or wear, or for the purpose of change, the wood covering can be easily and quickly removed and replaced by the same or by other kinds of wood, without rendering necessary the removal of the baluster from position.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim is As a new article of manufacture, a metal baluster having the whole or a portion of its surface covered with Wood veneer, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of February, 1875.
GEo. S. PRINDLE, E. F. M. FAEHTZ.
