WEB-SUPPLYING SYSTEM.

This invention relates to web supplying systems for printing presses .and other receiving machines.
The invention has among its objects to provide an improved method of attaching the web of a reserve roll to the web of an active roll without necessitating stopping of the receiving machine.
Another object is to provide a simple and reliable web changing device which is adapted to attach the-web of a reserveroll to the web of an active roll while maintaining said rolls in fixed axial positions.
Another object is to provide a web changing device of the aforesaid character hav- .ing means associated therewith for auto matically severing the web of the active roll upon attachment of the web of the re.- serv-e roll thereto.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear.
'The accompanying drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention which will a now be described. it being understood that the embodiment illustrated is susceptible of modification without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Re erring to Fig. 1, the same illustrates r a web feeding mechanism of the character disclosed in my copending application. Serial No. 683,306, having a web changing device embodying the invention associated therewith, said device being designated by reference numeral 1. As set forth in said application, the web feeding mechanism includes separate roll supporting frames 2 and 3, rotatably mounted upon shafts 4 and 5, respectively, each of said frames being provided with filed December 29, 1923,
spindles adapted to be inserted into opposite ends of a web roll to support the same and to rotate therewith. Each of the roll supporting spindles has a brake drum 6 tioned application, the angular position'of each of. the frames 2 and 3 can'be varied by its associated motor to facilitate installation of the web rolls and to also provide for variation of the tension on the proceeding web. 1
The web changing device 1 is arranged intermediate the roll supporting frames 2 .and 3, and is carried by a shaft 13 rothe same being shownin tatably supported at opposite ends within suitable bearings in edestals 10. As best shown in Figs. 2 an 3, the web changing device 1 includes a web pasting member 14 preferably formed of flexible material such as rubber and of such length that the same projects beyond the ends of the rolls carried by frames 2 and 3. Pasting member 14 is clamped between a pair ofplates 15 by rivets 16 and; said plates have a'spacing member 17 therebetween and are secured thereto by rivets 18. Pasting member 14 is carried by tubular members 19 arranged in pairs at opposite ends thereof, the upper ends of said tubular members being secured to plates 15 by rivets 20. Each air'of supporting members (19 is adjustably secured to opposite ends f an arm 21., and each of said arms is fixed\;to shaft 13 intermediate the ends thereof. 1
For a purpose hereinafter set forth each of the plates-15 has an elongated web holding member 22 associated therewith, said web holding members being pivotally secured to their respective plates by hinges 23 arranged at spaced points throughout the'length thereof. Also, as best shown in Fig. 3, each of the web holding members 22 is provided with spaced openings 24 forreceivmg a felt strip 25, said strip being woven throu h said openings in the manner shown. TIeans is provided for biasing the web holding members 22 into engagement with member 14, said means including a plurality of clips 26 arranged in pairs on opposite sides of said holding members, and a spring 27 associated with each pair of said clips. Each pair of dlips 26 is pivotally secured to a pair of supporting posts 28 by pins 29, said posts being fixed within openings in plates 15 and spacing member 17. Springs 27 are arranged with in openings in plates 15 and each is held under tension by pins 30 hearing on the outer faces of its associated clips.
As hereinafter set forth, the above described web changing device 1 is rotated during web changing operations, and as shown in Fig. l movement thereof is limited by stops 31 and 32 on pedestal 10. said stops being arranged to engage one of the arms 21. Also, as hereinafter set forth, the web changing device 1 is provided with weighted means for moving the same from either extreme position to its other extreme position. arm 33 rotatably mounted on shaft 13 and a cooperating collar 34 fixed to said shaft. As shown in Fig. 3, the lower end of arm 33 is bifurcatedto receive the collar 34. and said collar is provided with spaced shoulders 35 and 36 to cooperate with opposite sides of arm 33.
The web changing device 1 is also provided with web severing knives. 37 and 38, said knives being arranged at substantially right angles to the plates 15 and being secured thereto by rivets 39.
The function and operation of the aforedescribed web changing device will now be more fully described in connection with Figs. 4 to 6, inclusive. As shown in Fig. 4, the active web roll is mounted on frame 3, and the web thereof is drawn upwardly between a pair of guide rollers 40 and over a compensating roller 41. Prior to exhaustion of the active web roll on frame 3, a reserve web roll is mounted on frame 2. The reserve web roll is arranged so that the same will unwind in a clockwise direction and the outer end thereof is folded backwardly upon itself to provide a flap 42. An adhesive having been applied to the outer face of flap 42 the web is drawn from the reserve roll and passed over the upper edge of pasting member 14, the web changing device being held in the position shown in Fig. 4 by the weighted arm The folded edge of the reserve web roll is then inserted between pasting member 14 and right hand -web holding member 22, and the weighted arm is moved from its full line position to its dotted line position. When the active roll mounted on frame 3 is about to become exhausted the press is Such means includes a weighted reserve web roll mounted on frame 2 is ro- Y tated by hand in a clockwise direction and at a speed corresponding substantially to such threading speed. Upon rotation of the reserve Web roll the web changing device 1 moves in a clockwise direction under the action of the weighted arm 33, and, as shown in Fig. 5, during such movement the outer face of the flap 42 is brought into engagement with the active web and is firmly pressed thereagainst by the flexible pasting member 14. Flap 42 adheres to the proceeding web of'the active roll and is drawn between the guide rollers 40. and at the same time the folded edge of the reserve web roll is withdrawn from between pasting member 14 and holding member 22, and knife 38 is brought into engagement with the web of the active roll to sever the same. The web changing device 1 then drops to the position shown in Fig. 6 under the action of the weighted arm 33.
The web changing device operates in a reverse manner from that above described when effecting web changing operations between a reserve roll mounted on frame 3 and an active roll mounted on frame 2. The reserve web roll on frame 3 is arranged so that the same will unwind in a counter clockwise direction and the folded end thereof is passed over the pasting member 14 and is held between the same and the left hand web holding member 22. The weighted arm 33 is then moved into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 6-and the web changing mechanism is then adapted to move in a counter clockwise direction to bring the web from the reserve roll on frame 3 into contact with the web of the active roll on frame 2. Upon attachment of the web of the reserve roll on frame 3 to the active roll on frame 2. knife 37 engages the web of the latter roll to sever the adhesive portion thereof against the proceeding web of said active roll while maintaining said rolls in fixed axial positions.
2. In a web renewing mechanism, in combination, a pair of spindles either being adaptedto support an active web roll and the other a reserve web roll, the latter having an .adhesive ap ied to a portion on the outer end of its we l and means movable in opposite directions between said rolls to draw the web from said reserve roll and to press the adhesive portion thereof against the web of said active roll while maintaining said rolls in fixed axial positions, and means associated with said former means for severing the web of said active roll upon sealing of the end of said reserve roll thereto.
3. In a Web renewing mechanism, in combination, a pair of spindles, either being adapted to support an active web roll and the other a reserve web roll, the latter having a folded back portion on the outer end of the web thereof, and having an adhesive applied to one face-of such folded back portion, and means for holding the folded portion of said reserve roll, said means being movable in opposite directions between said rolls and being adapted to press the adhesive face of said reserve roll against the web of said active roll.
4. In a web renewing mechanism, in combination, a pair of spindles, either being adapted to support an active web roll and the other a reserve web roll, the latter having a folded back portion on the outer end of the web thereof, and having adhesive applied to one face of such folded back portion, means for holding the outer end of the web of said reserve roll, said means being movable in opposite directions between said rolls and being adapted to press the adhesive face of said reserve roll against the web of said active roll, and means associated with said former means for severing the web of said active roll upon sealing of the web of the reserve roll thereto.
5. In a web renewing mechanism, in combination, a pair of spindles either being adapted to support an active web roll and the other a reserve web roll, the latter having a folded back portion on the outer end of the Web thereof and having an adhesive applied to one face of such folded back portion, of a web transferring mechanism movable in opposite directions between said rolls, said mechanism havin means associated therewith for detachab of said reserve roll and for pressing the ad,- hesive face of said reserve roll against the web of said active roll.
6. In a web renewin mechanism, the combination with a pair 0 spindles, either being holding the folded edge adapted to support an active web roll and the other a reserve web roll, the latter roll ,having the outer end of its web folded back upon' itself and having an adhesive applied to one face of such folded back portion, of a web transferring device movable in opposite directions bet-ween said rolls, said device including a yielding member for pressing the adhesive face ofthe web of the reserve rolhagainst the web of the active roll and means on opposite sides of said member for detachably holding the folded edge on' the outer end of the web of the reserve roll during web transfering operations.
7. In a web renewing mechanism, the combination with a pair of spindles, either being adapted to support an active web roll and the other a reserve web roll, the latter roll having the outer end of its web folded back upon itself and having an adhesive applied to one face of such foldedback portion, of a pivoted web transferring device located between said spindles and movable in opposite directions through a given range, said device including a yielding member for pressing the adhesive face on the outer end of the web of the reserve roll against the web of the active roll, means on opposite sides of said member for detachably holding the folded edge of the reserve roll during web transferring operations and weighted means associated with said element for biasing the same from either extreme position towards its opposite extreme position.
8. In a web renewing mechanism, in combination, means for supporting an active web roll and a reserve web roll in a parallel relation, the latter having the outer end of its web folded back upon itself and having an adhesive applied to one face of such folded back portion, of a webtransferring device movable in opposite directions between said rolls, said device including a yielding mem her for pressing the adhesive face of the web of said reserve roll against the web of said active roll and having means associated therewith for detachably holding the folded edge of said reserve roll during web transferring operations.
