DOCUMENT-Lemmas CLAMP.
Application filed February This invention relates to temporary binders, and more particularly to a binder clamp for retaining loos-e sheets, newspapers, etc. in book-form, and also to a binding protector for magazines, periodicals, and the like. The principal object of the invention is to provide a temporary metallic binder clamp with an ornamental cover in the form of a book or magazine, secured thereto, for securely retaining loose sheets and the like therein, and maintaining the sheets in bookform without altering the sheets for placement therein or marking the insertions.
Another object of the invention isto provide a temporary hinder clamp as specified, which is' adapted to securely clamp the bound edge of magazine or like periodical, and at the same time provide a suitable cover for preser 'ing the original condition of the magazine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a binding clamp specified, which is readily applied, durable in construction, and highly etiicient for the purpose for which it- 0 is designed.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detail description, and in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the binder clamp and cover therefor in open position.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the binder clamp and cover partly in section.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary end view of the binder clamp in open position.
Figure l is a fragmentary sectional end view of the binder clamp in closed position.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure a, showing a modified form of the retractile spring element.
Figure 6 is a detail view of one of the finger pieces including the rivet pin.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the invention comprises a pair of semicircular body sections 10 and 11, which are hingedly joined as at 12, by means of a plurality of spaced hinged barrels 13 which are formed on one of the edges of each body section and alternate with a like number of cut-out spaces 14, which are adapted for effecting the interlocking engagement of the hinged barrels 13, and the subsequent registration of the apertures in the said hinged barrels for passage therethrough of a suitable hinge pin or rod 15. Said hinged pin extending slightly beyond the end 16 of the 5,1926. Serial N0.:86,581.
body sections .10 and 11 forfieffecting a pivotal connection thereto, by meansof a pair of eye rivets 17 of an arcuat'ely formed wooden strip '18 adjacent to and parallel with the hinged ends of the body sections '10 and llfor cementing or otherwise securing to said strip 18, an ornamental cover 'or buckrum binding '19. The parallel front edges of the body sectionslO and 11 are each provided with an outwardly extending arcuately formed lip 20, with the inner surface 21 of the lip 20 knurled or'otherwise serrated for effectively gripping a smallv number or loose sheets which'may be placed tnerebetween. Each end of the binding clamp is provided with a pair of toggle links 22 which are pivoted or otherwise secured to the side face 23 of the arcuately formed clamping lip 20, for holding the body sections lUand 11 in open position against the contracting action of a pair of springs 24: which are attached in the interior of the device, by means of a plurality of cars 25 secured to the inner convex surface of the semi-circular body sections 10 and 11 adjacent the ends thereof. The normally centrally extending pivoted free ends 27 of the toggle links 22 are further provided outwardly with a finger piece 28 which forms part of the rivet which pivots the free ends 27 of the toggle links 22. Said linger piece 28 provides means for readily opening the body sections 10 and 11 when 1t 7 is desired to place a magazine, loose sheet or the like therein,'or for closing the said sections when an object as above described, has been placed therein.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing, it will be readily seen that l have provided an etiicient and durable binder clamp for-temporarily securing loose leaves, magazines, newspapers, or the like, and which is also provided with an outer covering which may be ornamented for providing a pleasing book appearance; and while I have shown and described one practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself to the exact construction as herein set forth, and. deem myself at liberty to make such changes and modifications which fairly fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
What I claim is:
1. A document binder comprising a pair of clamping sections hingedly united along certain of their corresponding longitudinal edges and being semi-circular, a backing strip spaced from Where the edges of said sections are hingedly united for the support of a buckram binding cover, means carried by the strip and connected to the hinged edges for the support of the clamping sections relative to the strip, said buckram binding passing from the exterior of the strip and being secured to and conforming to the exterior of the clamping sections throughout their length, tensioning means for normally forcing said sections into closed positions, and means for holding the sections in open positions against the action 15 of the tensioning means.
2. A document binder comprising a pair a of hingedly united document clamping sections provided With tensioning means to normally hold them in clamping positions, a backing strip, devices carried by one face of the strip and in turn connected to the hinged portions of the clamping sections for spacmg the strip from the sections adjacent their hinged portions, and a buckram binding cover engaging over and secured to the exterior of the strip and conforming and secured to the exterior face of the clamping sections throughout their length.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
SIMON J. BABIAN.
