This invention relates toimprovements in 1 devices for removing the stones or'pits' efr'om -p'e'aches, and isespecially' adapted fo'r use 1n connection with clingstone peaches. In such peaches, as the name denotes, the pits complicated machines for removing peach plts which are successful with freestone peaches, non-e as far as I am aware, are
suited for removing the pits of clingstone I -stemend facing the j a ws, and with the plane f peaches. 1 V I The principal object of my invention. is
to provide a hand implement by means of.
which an operator, after a certain amount of practice, can readily remove the pits from a whole box of peaches in from fi've to seven minutes, and without halving the fruit or spoiling the exterior appearance of the same to any appreciable extent.
A further object of the invention is 'to' produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be ,exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed. 1
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of time to each other for a certain distance, or until" the side cutting edges?) of the jaws have completely severed the fruit from the parts 1 as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification andfclaim.
In the drawings similarcharactersofreferenceindicate corresponding parts in the.
several views n Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a peach, showing the pitter engaged with the pit thereof. Fig.2 is a perspective view of the peach :and pitter, showing the latter asbeing withdrawn fromthe peach with the pit.
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the jaw mem-- bers of the pitter.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of referen e on the drawingsnthe numeral 1 denotes a pair of jaws, whose ad jacent faces are somewhat concave'd or edges, both along the sides and around the tips thereof are sharpened as" at 3 for cutting purposes. the outer and lnner surfaces.
' of the jaws joining each other all along such. This edges at an acute angle, as shown. shape and construction makes it easy to insert the jaws into the peach. and then turn the same when the jaws are thusembedded,
for the purpose hereinafter shown.
' The jaws, and the concave groove therein, have a length greater than that of a peach pit. and at their inner ends are hinged together as at 4 in a suitable manner, such as groove of the jaws.
jaws normally spread.
"The operation of the device is as "follows:
The pitter is held in one hand and a peach 1 7 in the other, the peach bein'g'h-eld with its of the. split-line of the pit 8 parallel to the aws, this position being determined by the position of the grooved depression 7 always evident on the outside of the peach.
for instance'a'sd plier construe vtion' an'dythe'ilike. J
The "jaws are allowedfito spread suflicientw to cause themto'just'clearthe'pit, and are .then inserted the necessary distance into-the peach about-the pit as shown in Fig. 1, this distance being soon'easily gauged after a i little experience. The jaws are then brought together aboutlthe pit by pressing the grips 5 together, the pit seating inthe'concave,
' The peach and pitter are then turned relatained on the jaws to-hold'the pit firmly therebetween, the peach and pitter' are pulled apart, causing the pitto be withdrawn clean- With the clamping pressure j still maiu- 'pit'may be discharged therefrom, and the peach.
- tool 'is then ready tobe used on'another 7:-
reason I have found thisv to'be the most convenient and least tiringposition for the hand of the operator. i
The pistol grip effect provides an admin able handle to hold-the jaws infixed posi tion while impaling the-peach and then for the twisting operation to remove thepit. If the gripping handles project longitudithese grips being at right angles to the flat 2 plane of the jaws, provide a direct leverage nally of the jaws it is practically impossible for the operator to get a sufficient frictional grip on the same to permit easy twisting of the pit. By having the right angle leverage however theoperationis made an easy one. I
From the foregoing descriptionit willbe readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of theinvention asset forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from, such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claim. Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and usetuland desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
HA peach pitter comprising a pair of 0ppositely disposed substantially spoonshaped jaws adapted to be inserted into a peach to partially surround and grip thepit, hinge means connecting the jaws adjacent one en thereof, and handle grips on the jaws beyond the hinge and extending at substantiallyright angles to the flat plane of the jaws for clamping the jaws together on the pit and to form a leverage for twisting the jaws to cut the pit from the flesh of the peach.
In testimony whereof I aflix mysignature.
