The present application relates to improvements in sewer construction. and constitutes a division oi? my sin'iilarly entitled co-pendiug application Serial No. 47,281, filed July 31, 1925.
The invention described and claimed in this application relates to an improved straining arrangement for sewer pipes, whereby to exclude from the pipes leading from receiving basins any matter other than liquid which may have found its way into the basin. 1
The invention further contemplates a novel construction of sewer pipe connection with a basin involving the use of a straining arrangement combined with a cover to give access to the pipe without regard to the straining device.
The invention has for a further object a novel construction of a sewer basin, whereby to ail'ord increased room for performing operations in the basin.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention will be more fully described hereinafter, and will be more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.

Referring for the pr sent to Figure 1, 100 designates a basin and 101 designates an ofilset chamber shown as eoinmunicatiug with the basin and adapted to receive the end of a pipe which connects with the sewer. An elbow 102 is shown as coupled by a, flange and bolt connection 103 with a pipe 104; leading to the sewer. The elbow is shown as extending through the offset and into the chamber 101 but not into the basin proper, leaving ample room for a workman to op crate. The lower end of the elbow is shown as provided with numerous perforations 10h termin a. strainer tor the liquid passing from the basion into the pipe 104:. Except for the perforations, the strainer is intended to be importer-ate, so that nothing can get into the pipe 10-1 from the basin except through the perforations 1105. it. lid 106 is shown as pivoted at 10 at ll 1 angle of the elbow, the arrangement shown being; such that the lid 106 may be tilted back to rest against the wall of the client in an inclined position where it need not be Sl'lPlJOl'tGtl. A. plug may be inserted in the opening; in the elbow when the lid raised and the lid also gives access to the pipe.
in Figure 2 the basin 108 is unprovided with any effect except a slight offset 109 to receive a lid 100, the lid being capable of assuming); a baokwardly slanting position. In this instance the elbow and strainer are shown as mounted. directly in the basin.
lileiierring to Figures 3, 1: and 5, I may use a. lid as 133, pivoted at one side, as shown at 184;, and the lid may be thrown heel: toward. or against the wall of the basin. 13y pivoting the lid at one of the sides the use oi an offset in the basin may be dispensed with. While I have shown means at 135 and 130 for locking the lid, such means may be dispensed with if desired. The lid is shown as provided with a rim 137, so that the lid 133 will not fall into the opening it is intended to cover, and so that foreign matter will not gain entrance at the point where the lid 183 and the opening which it is intended to cover meet. 01' the rim 137 may be dispensed with and the cover may be made larger than the opening it is intended to cover.
The grating or guard 138 is shown in Figures 3. l and 5 as built into the roadway and curb and access to the basin may be had throijigh the opening over which the cover 139 is intended to fit. In this case the space 140 need not be large enough to permit the removal ol ii'oreipgiii. matter from the basin by lnlcltets or otherwise, as such foreign matter may be removed through the opening over which the cover 139 is intended to fit.
In Figures 1 and 2 it is preferred that the space 1 10 be large enough to remove the material by means of buckets or otherwise, as no provision is made in these figures for an opening directly above the basin.
It is obvious that various change and modifications may be made in. the details at constriui'stiou and design of the above spccitllill ically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
What is claimed is 1. A sewer construction comprising a basin having an offset chamber communicating therewith, a conduit, an elbow coupled to the conduit at one end and having its other end extending into the offset chamher and being provided with perforations forming a strainer, an opening in the elbow, and a pivoted cover for the opening.
2. A sewer construction comprising a basin, a pipe extending with its end close to said basin, an elbow coupled to the end of said pipe and having one branch extending through the wall of the basin. the other branch of the elbow extending downwardly in the basin and being provided with perforations, the elbow being open in axial alinement with the pipe and first named branch, and cover means for normally keeping the opening closed.
3. A sewer construction comprising a basin having an ol'lset in one lateral wall. a sewer pipe extending close to the otl'set, an elbow construction coupled to said pipe and extending into the offset: with the pmri'orated portion in the ofi'set, said elbow having an opening in alinement with the pipe. a cover for closing the opening, a cover in the roadway and curb above the offset portion, said ofi'set portion beneath the last named cover being cut down to give access to the interior of the basin.
4. A sewer construction comprising a basin. a pipe, an elbow having one branch extending in alinen'ient with the pipe. and coupled thereto. said branch extending into the basin, said elbow having a second branch offset downwardly from the first branch and from the line of the pipe and provided with perforations, and a removable closure tor the elbow in line with the pipe and first mentioned branch.
