UNITED .STATLES 1,659,444 PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. "ROLLASON, OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO WHEELI NG STEEL CORPORATION, OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA, A CORPORATIONDF DELA- Application filed June ;5,
This invention relatesto certain newand usefulimprovements in riveting attachments for power-presses, audit pertains morerpar- 'ticularly to machines for feeding rivets in stroke, orriveting movement; of the press,
thereby obviating the dangers incident to hand placement of rivets. 2O
novel meausfor feeding; the rivets tothe positioning means, and also toprovlde means for preventing any jamming ofthe rivets and consequent injury to the mechan sm.
The invention has still further objects which will hereinafter be set forth, and it re sides inthenovel construction and combination of theiparts which will now :be described.
In the drawings Figure l isa side elevationof the invens tion applied to agpower press;
Figure 2 is a section on line -22, Fig. 1; Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken longitudinally through the magazine showing themeans for feeding the rivets to the distributing tubes;
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view of the yieldable guide means; l I
Figure 5 is a section taken substantially on line 5-5, Fig. 4;
Figure 6 is a detail in rear elevation of the feeder disk; and a Figure 7 is an enlarged sectionon line 7-7, Fig. 2. j y
In, proceeding in accordancewith the pres ent invention, a hollow conical magazine 1 is stationarily seated-in a horizontal position within a head 3 which, in'turn, is rigidly mounted on the web of the press and which is equipped with ball-bearings 4 for the inner end of a horizontal shaft 2 which extends centrally through said magazine. A feeder disk 5 is rigidly mounted on the shaft 2 and,
The invention further aims to provide BIVEIING MACHINE FOR IPOWER PRESSES.
1926. Serial No.113,932;
ates with the latter to form a .T-shaped groove, as shown more fully in Fi 170f the drawings. A pair of vertical idlstributin tubes! 8. extend downward from the slots 6. o the head 3 and are. spaced apart a distance equal tothatbetween the riveting points in the usual attachment ears of the handle.
Guide pins 10 are provided in the head 3 and ,are arranged adjacent to-the inlet ends of thetubeaas shown in Fig. 5. Saidpins are rounded onthelr inner ends and are provided attheir opposite ends withheads 11 against which rest coil springs 12 which are disposed insockets 13 formed in the head 3 and said springs have their outer ends seated upon disks I l-which are secured in position by means-of screws 15. The power shaft .19 may beoperated by any desired source of power as ordinarily. The rivets-are loosely placedrin the magazine through aninlet 20 providedin the latter and uponoscillation of the shaft 2 and therelativelyfixed feeder disk 5,the rivets due to the forwardly sloping formation of the ma azine, gravitate intoengagement with the disk S and are held thereagainst by the force ofgravity-and the pressure exerted by the remaining rivets.
Some of the rivets are thus carried'into the T-slots 6 of the feeder disk 5, their heads heing seated onthe bottein ofthe magazine, and gravitate with their shanks into engagement withthepins 10, wherehyithey are directed or deflected into the distributin tubes 8, as shown at R in Fig. 7. Should any jamming of the rivets occurbefore the latter enter thetubes 8,the oscillating movement of the disk 5 will causethe rivetsforci- 10, causing the latter to be depressed against thetension of their springs for permitting the rive ts to pass thereby, lthus preventing injury to the mechanism. To further safeguard against injury to the mechanism resultant from such jamming, a slip or friction clutch 16 is provided on the shaft 2 and is connected to the link 17 driven by the crank 18 of the power shaft 19.
Referring now to 1* igs. 1, 2 and"! or" the drawings, it will he noted that the rod 21 is slidahly mounted in the machine frame and is tensionedby a coil spring A cross head 23 is attached to the rod 21 intermediate the ends of the latter, and its endsare provided with pull rods 2% turned outwardly at their outer ones to term hand s 25. The rod 21 is slidably mounted in cross bars 26 and 27, and the 7"" a are also apertured to receive and acco" ply guide the pull rods The inn r end oi the rod 21 is provided with a cro head 28 to the ends of which a pair of u bars 29 are seen 'ed. ihe feed bars 29 are slid-ably disposed in a block '30 and operate through slots 31 provided in the bed of the block. A stud 32 extends rearwardly from the block and is seciu'ed by a nut to the me oj die tion. A yieldably inotmted u table 3% is carried by the front end oi the, block and is apertured' to receive pair of rod-like anvils 35, the latter being rigidly mounted in the block 39 and b ing loosely extended through the table 34. it coil spring 86 forms L yieldable support table 34:, and the latter is provided \vitl grooves 3'? that register withthe grooves of they feeds r (is 29; the grooves:
stop 39 for engagement with one side ot rue -pan P is secured to the block 30, and a pair of stops 40 are secured to opposite sides of the block 30, the latter serving to engage the outer side edge of one end of the pan so as to position the latter properly to the usual punch and set 421 of the press.
The operation, briefly stated, is follows:
Rivets are placed in the magazine 1 and the feed disk 5 is oscillated through the shaft 19 and the crank 17-. This effects tation of the rivets and, due to the conica and curved formation ot the magazine, the rivets in a head-down position enter the slots 6 of the feed dish and then gravitate until their shanks enter the groove 7 ot the head 3, the rivet shanks being engaged by the guide pins 10, which latter deflect the rivets into the distributing tubes 8. is shown in Fig. 7, the rivets pass from the lower ends of the tubes 8 into the grooves 31 in bed of the block 30. whereuoon the operator by grasping either one or both of the handles 25, advances the rivets into the grooves 3! of the table 3% until they engage the stops 38, which latter dispose tire rivets with their heads down and seated on the upper ends of anvils The operator then places the pan and the attaching ears of the handle over the rivets in the position shown in Figs.
1 and 2 oi the drawings, the, pan being ingsupported thereon until said teed rods have been retracted to their normal positions.
li hat is claimed is v 1. in a riveting machine, a rivet magazine, a head at the outer end of the magazine, said head having therein a circular oovc, a feed disk oi circular torm rotatable in the liagazine and having islets in its periphery for feeding the rivets heads down and with their shanks projecting into the groove of the head, a pair of parallel relatively spaced distril'iuting tubes extending into the magazine to receive the rivets, yieldable rivet guiding means carried by the head tivetubes, and means for advancing said rivets from said tubes to riveting position.

In a rivet feeding device for power es, a horizontally disposed conical mag- .e having a grooved head, an oscillatory U3; dish in the magazine havingperipheral ves cooperating with the grooves of the rto receive the rivets and to position heads down, means to actuate the dish,
