1,663,901. PATENT OFFICE.
MILTON L. BROWN, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
GARBAGE run wr'rn non-nn'racnnnnn COVER. I
Application filed January 15, 1925. Serial No. 2,550.
My invention relates to a-receptacle that is especially designed for receiving garbage or other refuse and the principal object of my invention is to provide the receptacle with a non-detachable cover, thereby pre-- venting" said cover from becoming lost or mislaid when the receptacle is being handled by the garbage collector.
Further objects of my invention are, to
It! rigidly connect the receptacle cover and the bail or handle, thereby greatly facilitating the manipulation of the cover when the same is placed upon or removed from the receptacle, and to provide simple and efli'cient means whereby the cover may be locked or secured in closed position upon the receptacle.
' With the foregoing and other objects in View, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of 2 parts that will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspectlve view of a garbage receptacle contracted in accordance with my invention.
.Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the receptacle.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the receptacle with the cover in open position.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on the line 5--5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the cars that is used in connecting the covercarrying bail or handle to the receptacle.
Referring by numerals to the accomp'anying drawings, 10 designates a pail-like re ceptacle that is preferably formed of sheet metal and secured to the upper portion of the outer surface thereon and at diametrically opposite points are bail or handle attaching ears of the form illustrated in Fig. 6. Each ear comprises a base portion 11, a body upwardly and outwardly from said base portion and'a head portion 13, the ends of which latter extend beyond the sides of said bod portion 12.
.A cover-14., preferably ormed of sheet' metal has a depending marginal flange 15 that is adapted to surround the upper portion of the body of receptacle 10, and extending diametrically across the top of this cover is a metal strap 16 that forms'the combined cover, handle and'bail.
The central portion of this strap is ex the ends 0 -tion, handle 17 is manually engaged and a cover therefor, a' strap secured to and extended upward to' form a convenient handle 17 that may be readily grasped by the hand and those portions of the strap adjacent to this handle may be rigidly secured to cover 14 in any suitable manner, preferably'by rivets such as 18.
From the edges of cover 14, the-end portions of strap 16 are extended. downward to form bail members 19 that are provided with longitudinally dis osed slots 20; for the re-' ception of the b0 y portions 12 of the. ears Y that are secured-to receptacle body 10.
Thus, when the parts are properly assemthe slots 20 in bail members 19 enables cover "14 to be raised or lowered for a distance corresponding to the length of the slots 20 and this movement permits the cover to be swung to either side as shown in Fig. 3, when garbage or the like is deposited in or discharged from the receptacle.
Formed in each bail member 19 to the side of the slot 20 therein is a notch 21 and when the cover is in proper closed position upon so the receptacle, these notches occupy positions directly opposite to the arms 12 of the ears.
Thus, when the cover is closed and it is desired to lock or secure said cover in posislight rotary movement imparted to said cover, thereby en aging arms 12' in the notches 21. (See igs. 4 and 5.)
Thus the cover is secured in closed position and the receptacle may belifted and carried with the cover inclosed position thereon. v
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a simple, practical and convenient receptacle that is particularly adapted for receiving garbage andlike refuse and which reoe tacle is rovided with a cover that cannot e detach from said receptacle and mjslaid or lost.
Obviously, minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved garbage receptacle may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is set 4 forth in the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
The combination ,with a receptacle, of a.
tending diametrically across the top ofsaidcover, the central portion of which strap is extended upwardly from the top of the cover to form a handle, the end portions of which strap are extended downward a substantial distance below the lower end of the cover, there being elongated straight slots formed in the depending end portions of said strap, there being a. laterally disposed notch formed at one side of each slot near the upper end thereof, plates secured to the upper portion of the body of the receptacle at diametrically opposite points, a neck portion extending upwardly and outwardly from each plate,
the neck portions of the two plates extending respectively through the slots in the depending portions of the strap, a head portion formed integral with the upper end of the neck portion of each plate, the length of each head portion being substantia 1y greater than the width of the slot in the depending portion of the strap and the width of each head portion being slightly less than the width of the slot in the strap so as to permit disengagement of the straps from the heads when the cover is positioned so that the straps occupy positions parallel with said heads. ,y
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
MILTON L. BROWN.
