IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-SWEEPERS.

Be it known that I, ALBERT H. SPENCER, of Boston, Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Oarpet-Sweepers, ot' which the following is a specitcation:

My invention consists in so mounting the brush in the box ot' a carpet-sweeper that it will be held in contact with the floor by its own weight. Heretot'ore all carpet sweepers known to me have had the boxes to receive the brush-shaft so constructed and arranged that the axis of the brush was always at a given distance from the carpet until adjusted to some other height by some mechanical device.

In the drawing, Ais the spindle upon which the brush revolves; B, the brush-shaft; O, the case, or an end thereof, with the cover G closing it at the top; D, the elongated bearing formed upon the end plate a.

In my improved carpet-sweeper, the weight ot' the brush rests upon the carpet, and is sup'- ported by the bristles, the bearings being elongated vertically in order to allow a slight Vertical motion to the brush. One of the bearings-that next the driVing-wheels-may be made in the usual way. care being' taken not to make the spindle t it too snugly, as the driving-wheels tend to keep the brush in its place.` The other bearing should be a vertical slot-th at is, of' a diameter vertically much greater than its diameter horizontally. For convenience in removing and replacing the brush, I prefer to make this slot open at the top.

When one of my sweepers is in use, this bearing otl the brush-shaft is formed by the two vertical walls ofthe slot, and the slot might well be open both at top and bottom, so far as the operation of the sweeper is conce1-ned, as the bristles, acting on the door, would keep the brush from falling too low; but I- preter in all cases to close this slot at the bottom, as otherwise the brush is liable to get displaced when the sweeper is lifted; but there is no need of closing this slot at the top, as the bristles come in contact with the cover, and thus prevent the brush from rising far enough to disengage its spindle from the slot when the cover is closed.

What I claim as my invention is- The combination, in a carpet-sweeper, of the case O, cover G, spindle A, brush-shaft B, and open vertically-slotted bearing-plate D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
