Description

L. G. FAIBBANK. Combined Reading and Writing Desk N0. 166,516. Patented Aug. 10,1875.
I WITNESSES INVENTOR ILFETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHEH, WASHINGTON. 0. O.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEMUEL Gr. FAIRBANK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
- IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED READING AND WRITING DESKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,516, dated August 10, 1875; application filed April 1 2, 1875.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEMUEL G. FAIRBANK, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reading and Writing Desks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention relates so make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2, side elevation; Fig. 3, sectional elevation.
My invention relates to a combined reading and writing desk; and consists in the manner of constructing the same, and the arrangement of. the difl'erent parts of the desk to suit the convenience of the person using the same.
In the accompanying drawing, A and A represent the ends of the desk, extending down and constituting the legs B and B, and terminating in the feet 0 and G. The upper end of each end piece is cut at an angle from the point 00 on the front side to the point 00 on the back side. The back is then closed from the point a to the top. A cleat is secured to each of the inner sides of the ends in the ordinary manner, which carries the drawer D. Over this drawer a partition is placed, which forms the bottom, to which the pigeon-holes b are secured. D, cover to desk, hinged at d. When closed, as represented in Fig. 2, a book or other matter can be placed upon the same, The bottom resting against the rib d, prevents the same from sliding from the desk, and obviates the necessity of holding the same with the hand. When used as a writing-desk the cover is turned down in front, as represented in Fig. 3, which forms a convenient desk upon which to write. E, rest for the feet, and pivoted to the ends of the desk or legs of the same, and when llSLd for the feet occupies the position represented in Fig. 3. When the person does not occupy the same with the feet, it is turned to the position represented in Fig. 1. F, receptacle, constructed between the feet of the desk, to receive slippers or boots, and provided with a cushioned cover upon which the feet can rest when desired.
It will be seen that an article of furniture of this kind is convenient in all its parts, combining beauty with utility, and, being light 3 and durable in its construction, can easily be moved from onepoint to another inthe room, and either at the side or in the center of the same it presents no points of objection to the most fastidious eye.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a combined reading and writing desk, the ends A and A, legs B and B,'feet G and 0, drawer D, cover D, foot-rest E, and the receptacle F, all constructed, combined, and
arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified and described.
LEMUEL e. FAIRBANK.
