IBAFFLE FOR STEAM DRUMS.
. Application filed June 30, 1927. Serial ,No. 202,569.
The invention relates to battle construc- :cions for steam boilers. It is applicable to boilers of all types in which a steam liberating space is provided above the level of the water. Its hangers are preferably con structed entirely of cast iron, in order to withstand the destructive action of the Water or agents carried thereby, and the device is built in sections in such manner that the parts are interchangeable, rendering .replacement or removal easy. The apparatus is constructed so as to utilize the upper part of the boilerdrum as the dry steam chamber, in contrast to other devices which carry the steam chamber ,as a part of their c0nstruction. The invention has for its objects, the provision of .a construction embodying the features specified above, wherein: (l) a very durable construction is secured, without any requirement for bolts and nuts, subject to :rust or corrosive action; (2) film battles ,are
self-draining, requiring no outside drainage andlconsequent lossof heated w'aterand corresponding reduction in efficiency; (3) a very elficient :bafiling .of the wet steam is secured, incident to the tortuous passage required and to the relative arrangement of the steam to pass through the the baffle plates; (-lthevarious plates and baflles are effectively sealed, one from the other, to insure against leakage and cause slots provided for the purpose; (5.) the battles are all properly drained and :the passages shielded against an inflow .of .water in the reverse direction through such passages, and; (6;) a relatively cheap, simple construction iis secured, which may be easily assembled and disassembled for the purposes of replacement and repair. Oneembodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section througha drum equipped with the improvement. Fig. 2 is a section through the drum showing the baffles in end elevation. Figs. 3 and 4 are sections through the battles 'takenrespectively longitudinally of the drum and transversely thereof. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are detail views of the cover plates used at the ends of the separator, Fig. 5 being a side elevation, Fig. 6 a vertical sectiomand Fig.
7 a plan view. Figs. 8, 9 andlO aredetail views of one of the sections of the distributing plate located above the baffles, Fig. 8
being a section on the line VIII+VIII of Fig. 9., fibeinga plan view andFrg. 10
a pair of longitudinally extending is made with -9 (Fig. .ened by 'the Q'larly. connected :as the battles and hangers, to l'c-orrosion. ries. of bafHesm-ay be increased as adding other sections below the lowest sec- ,consists of a Se ies beinganend elevation. And Fig. 11 is an enlarged vertical section through one of the hangers and the end of the distributing plate.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a steam drum having anoutlet 2, and provided with hangers 3 and 42 preferably of cast iron located on opposite sides of the outlet and secured in position by means of'the studs 5. A recess is provided at 6 in ,each hanger and filled with suitable packing, so that a tight joint the wallof'the drum. v Supported ,on the hangers is distributing plate made up of the three sections 7 8 and These sections are suitably stiffribs 10 and are made of cast ron to give the necessarycorrosion resisting properties. The sections of the plates are also slotted, as indicated at 11 in Figs. 3 and gether, as indicated at 16 -(Fig. 3.). These baffles vare, -like the hangers, preferably of cast iron, andinterfitwith i ch othercand with the distributing plate, as indicated at 1 7 (Fig. 3) and at 18 4;) in order to guard against leakage. i
The baiiie sections 12 just below .thesections of the distributing plate, are hung therefrom by the dovetail interlockingconnections 19 and 20, as indicated in @Fig. 4:, and each succeeding battle section is simito the one ,just below ,by
similar connections 19, and20. In this man nor, the baffle sections are releasably ,supported without the use of belts or the like. These connections may .be easily assembled and disassembled .by a sliding longitudinal movement, and being of cast iron, thesame are not subject By this ,means also, the se-I des ed y tion 15 shown. Each of the baffle sections of ;i -nv erted channels or Us 21 having the slots or perferations 22 through their top walls or webs. Between these channels 21 are the EU-shaped drain passages 23 extendingto the ends fthe sections and preferably. discharging through both ends through v the slots 24, 24'. In order to. shield these slats where circulation pipe from the body of water of each section are As indicated in Fig.
i so that the steam, in passing up through the series oi? bai'lies, via the slots sarily pursue the arrows in 22, will necest-he zig-zag path indicated by Fig.3, thus tending to in crease tlie ette ctiveness of the separation of the steam and water, the water which is deposited on the sections flowing down into t the passages 23, and then draining longitubaflles. These plates'are also preferably or nally of the steam chamber 27 (Figs,
28 (Fig. 1;,
- at their upper edges having 31. Bolts 32 extending through the slots secure the plates to and acking in the groove 33 serves to make longitudinally of the drum in order to nally of the the steam outlet andsecured to the walls of v the drum, aseries of "the hangers,
' securing ends of the battle plates. a 2. The combination with a steam-drum, hangers extending longitudidrum on opposite sides of the steam outlet and secured to the walls of the hangers, edges at the ends dinally of said passages through the slots 24. i, V p
In order to close off the ends of the dry l and 2) above the distributin plate, the segmental plates 28, shown in detail in Figs. 5, 6 and 'Z are employed, These plates are perwithflanges and discharging forated at 729, and provided the Wall of the drum,
a tightjoint between the plate and drum. The slots 31permit the plates 'to bemoved clamp them against the ends of the bafiies. This clamping action s secured by the use of bolts 34: (Figs. 1 and 2) (the perforations 29 and the.
perforations 35 (Fig. 11) in v the one set of bolts 34: serve closure plates tightly against the ends of the castiron.
What Iyclaiin is: 1. The combination with a steam drum, of a pair of hangers extending longitudi drum on the opposite baffie plates carried by closure plates with curved upper edgesatthe ends of the battle plates, and means for securing the curved portions ofthejplatesagainst the wall ofthe drum so that the plates maybe longitudinally thereof and other means. for" againstthe adjusted the sides of the plates of a pair of drum, a series of battle plates carried by the losure plates with curved upper wall of the drum for adjustment longitudihe provided with anex versely one is suspended from therein the slots extending through the hangers. In this manner, to secure both posite sides of the "to the walls ofthe drum,
