IMPROVEMENT IN WATCH-CASE SPRINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 167,063, dated August 24, 1875; application filed June 20, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANSEL S. BUCKELEW, of Golusa, in the county of Uolusa and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Watch-(Jase Spring; and I do hereby taining the spring.

The object of thisinvention is to provide, as a new article of manufacture, a watch-case spring, which may be readily fitted to ordinary watch-cases without being made entire for each particular watch.

The invention consists in the special construction of the spring-bar, the same being made of a thin piece of suitable metal, curved to adapt it to the form of a watch-case, and provided at one end with a spring, at the other end with a laterally-projecting lug, and at a point nearly midway between the ends with a depending support, said lug and support being made very thin, so that by slight filing on their ends the spring-bar may be easily and neatly fitted to the watclrcase, all as hereinafter more fully described.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, A. designates a small segmental plate or bar of steel, adapted for insertion in the cavity of the watch-rim, and formed with the curved projection a, which serves the purpose of a spring to open the ease, and which, when the plate A is titted-to the case, is located at the hinge portion of the latter. B B designate small projections, which serve as filling to retain the bar A in position in the case when said bar is fastened by a screw passing through the rim and bar. For watches of uniform diameter the bars are all made of one size, and

-mit of being filed down to accord with the peculiarities of shape of the different watches.

The merit of this invention consists in making the spring-bars in the manner described,-

whereby a new article of manufacture and trade is provided, and the labor and expense of fitting springs to watch-cases very greatly lessened.

The bars are to be made in quantities and of different grades of size to suit the established grades of sizes in watches, and are readily fitted to the case by merely filing off so much of the filling B B as circumstances require, provided the proper exact size is not in stock.

It is obvious that this invention differs from the ordinary watch-case springs which are made specially for each particular watch, and which are troublesome and expensive.

I do not lay stress on, or attach any particular value to, the spring-bar as an attach: ment to the watch, as it does not really perform any new function in the case, but I do attach value to it as a new article of manufacture,,by the use of which trouble and expense are saved.

I therefore claim as my invention- As a new article of manufacture, the watchcase spring consisting of the fiat bar A, having its inner edge curved, and formed with the spring a at one end, the lateral projection B at the other end, and thedepending support B near the middle part, said projection and support being constructed as shown, and for the purpose specified.
