PENCIL GRIPPER.

My invention relates to desk sets. such as are described in the application of Walter Guyot. Serial No. 83,857 filed Jan. 26/26. It is customary in devices of this character to provide a number of pen receptacles. and it frequently happens that it is desirable to have one of the receptacles contain a mechanical pencil instead of a pen. but the pen gripping devices provided in these pen 0 receiving receptacles are not adapted to hold av mechanical pencil.

My invention has for its object to provide a. simple and inexpensive device which can be inserted in the. pen receiving receptacle. and which will permit the insertion of a mechanical pencil, such as the Big Brother pencil manufactured by The Park r Pen Company, and hold it convenienth for use.

My means of accomplishing this object will be more readily comprehended by having reference to the accompanying drawings, in WhlCl1- Fig. 1 is a. side elevation of my improved device;

My pencil gripper is formed of a. cylindrical sleeve'7. which is provided with apcripheral groove 8 adjacent its lower end. which is adapted to be. gripped by the ends of the resilient fingers on the pen ripper 6. so as to hold the sleeve 7 securely in position when it inserted in the pen receiving receptacle. The inner wall 9 of the grooi-e 8 is adapted to engage the. pointed portion 10 of the pencil 11. of which only a Fragmentary portion is shownas obviously it forms no part of my invention. Having thus described my invention. what I regard as new.- and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States. is:

1. ,A pencil gripper. comprising a combination with a receiving receptacle having a gripping device therein. of a cylindrical sleeve ofresilient material, having a pcripheral groove adjacent its lower end. an

outwardly flaring portion at its upper end. and a plurality of indentations where the flaring portion joins the cylindrical portion. the inner walls of said indentations engaging the body ofa pencil. the inner wall of said groove engag ng thepointed portion of the pencil. and the gripper engaging the groove to hold said sleeve in place.

2. A pencil gripper. comprising a. receiving receptacle having a gripping device therein. a sleeve mounted in said receptacle and held in position by the gripping device. the walls of said sleeve being formed so that they will engage't-he body and point of apen'cil.

3; A pencil gripper. comprising the combin ati on with a receiving recepta cle having a gripping device there-in. of detachable means inserted in said gripping device and held thereby. portions of said pencil gripper being adapted to engage a. pencil at different locations.

4. A pencil gripper. comprising the combination with a receiving receptacle of means to grip a pencil. andmeans to detach ably hold said gripping means in said receiving receptacle.

5. A pencil gripper. comprising a receiving receptacle having a gripping device. and resilient means detachably held in position by said gripping device to receive and hold a. pencil.
