UNITED STATES JAMES 8. WHITE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GOLF BAG.
Application filed January 27, 1927. Serial No. 183,879.
This invention relates to a golf bag and is concerned particularly with the construction of certain pockets therein, with the means for affording access thereto, and with the relationship to each other of these several.
pockets, the object being to provide a serviceable construction which shall include at least one secret compartment which remains hidden from View when the other pockets are opened.
A suggestive embodiment of this invention is set forth in the accompanying drawings in the manner following:
Figure l is a side elevation of a golf bag having a secret pocket of the kind contemplated;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary View partly in elevation and partly in section, showing "a desirable location of the several pockets with respect to eachother and to the bag body;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in elevation looking toward one of the pockets on the bag body;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a detail in section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
A conventional golf bag such as is shown in Fig. 1 comprises a body A having, if
desired, a hood B capable of extension beyond the upper end of the bag to protect the club equipment therein. It may also include one or more pockets C affixed-to the sides of the bag at a convenient point. The exact shape or contour of these pockets is relatively unimportant, at least two different forms being suggested in the drawings.
The present invention is directed to the pocket construction shown in detail in Figs. 2, 4 and 5. It comprises an outer wall 10 connected by a marginal wall 11 with the bag body, the enclosed space constituting a main compartment (1. The material composing the pocket walls may be of any suitable fabric, leather, or composition capable of withstanding the conditions encountered in usage. Within the pocket thus formed is a secret compartment 6 formed by an inner partition 12 which extends lengthwise of the pocket adjacent the body of the bag. This partition along its bottom and throughout the greater portion of its side edges is connected to the bag body, or, if desired, to the proximate edges of the marginal wall 11, leaving an unattached top flap 13 which -is free to be bent back when access to this inner compartment is desired. This flap is normally secured in a detachable manner to the bag as by means of a snap fastener 14.
Extending between the partition 12 and the front pocket wall 10 is a bottom wall 15 of an upper compartment 0. This last named wall is extended by preference in an upward direction as at 16 adjacent the front wall 10 to connect therewith near its upper-edge 17, as best shown in Fig. 5. As the bottom wall of this upper compartment is connected also with the marginal wall and to the partition preferably close to the base or lower edge of the-flap 13, it serves in a measure to support this flap when it is bent back to afford an opening to the inner compartment 6.
Access to the main compartment or is afforded by a split opening 18 in its front wall 10. The edges 19 of this opening may be equipped with metallic reinforcements forming interlocking components of a well known hookless fastener which also includes a slidable connector 20. When this connector is moved upwardly from the position of Fig. 3 to the other end of the opening 18, the edges 19 are interlocked throughout their length. A similar type of opening may be provided for the upper compartment 0. As shown, this comprises a slit extending lengthwise of the marginal wall 11, the edges of the slit having interlocking reinforcements 21 with which co-operates a slidable connector 22 in the manner above set forth.
In the use of a golf bag having pockets constructed and arranged according to this invention, it is possible to open or close the main compartments by operation of the connector 20. In like manner manipulation of the connector 22 will open or shut the upper compartment 0. The rear wall of both of these compartments is formed by the partition 12 behind which is the third compartment 1) whose presence is not re vealed at any time. By first o ening the upper compartment, and then pul ing on the flap 13 to detach it from the fastening 14, this inner or secret compartment is made accessible. Security tothe contents thereof is afforded both by its hidden position and also, if desired, by any suitable lock, such as a padlock 23, which may fasten the connector 22 to a ring 24 that is attached to the outer side of the pocket, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
In the manufacture of a golf bag pocket of the kind herein described, means ma provided for reinforcing the edges 0 its several walls, for renderin the marginal walls extensible, for connectm together the several plies of these walls w ich enter or overlap, etc., according to common practice.
ible partition extending within the pocket adjacent the bag and secured in place thereto along its edges except at one end which forms a free flap, means for detachably fastening the flap in place adjacent the bag whereby to provide within the pocket a closure for the inner compartment therein, and closure means for the pocket affording access to the flap closure for the inner compartment therewithin, substantially as described.
2. A golf bagwith which is associated a pocket comprising an outer. wall with mar-- ginal walls connectin it to the bag, a flexible partition extending lengthwise within the pocket adjacent the bag and secured in place thereto along its edges except at one end which forms a free. flap, means for detachably fastening the flap in place adjacent the bag whereby to provide within the pocket aclosure for the inner compartment therein. a flexible wall connecting the outer wall with the marginal walls and partition at a int adjacent the base of the flap where y to provide a partition separating the pocket into two compartments, and se arate closure means afl'ording access to t e two compartments last named, the closure means for one compartment only afl'ording access to the flap opening into the inner compartment, substantiall as described.
3. A golf bag with w ich is associated a pocket comprising an outer! wall with mar inal walls connecting it to the bag, a flexi le partition extending lengthwise within the cket adjacent the bag and secured in p ace thereto along its edges except at one end which forms a free flap, means for detachably fastening the flap 1n place adjiicent the bag whereby to provide within t e pocket a closure for the inner compartment therein; a flexible wall extended between the outer wall and the partion to separate the pocket into tWo compartments in one of which the flap is'entirely contained, and separate closure means afi'ording access to each of the two compartments of the pocket, the closure means in the compartment adjacent the flap afi'ording access thereto and to the inner compartment therewithin, substantially as described. 1 I
4. A golf bag with which is associated a pocket comprising an outer wall with mar inal walls connecting it to the bag, a partition extending lengthwise within the ocket adjacent the bag and secured in p ace thereto along its edges except at one end which forms a free flap, means for detachably fastening the flap in place ad'acent the ba'gv whereby to provide within t e pocket a closure for the inner compartment therein, a flexible wall extending from the partition adjacent the base of the flap to a point adjacent the juncture of the outer and marginal walls and co-operating therewith to provide a separate compartment through which access to the flap must be gained, and lockable closure means for said last named com artment whereby to bar access thereto an to the compartment interiorly thereof, substantially as described.
'5. A golf bag having a substantially cylindrical wall, a member secured adjacent its edges to the wall of said bag and forming a pocket, a partition secured to said member and said wall and dividing said pocket into separate compartments, said pocket being formed'with separate openings afl'ording access to each of said compartments, and closure means for said openings.
6. A golf bag having a substantially cylindrical wall, a member secured adjacent its edges to the wall of said bag and forming a pocket, a artition secured to said member and sai wall and dividing Said pocket transversel into upper and lower compartments, sai pocket aving two separate o enings, one above and the other below said partition, and closure means for said openings.
7. A golf bag having a substantially cylindrical wall, a pocket member secured to said bag and comprising a wall spaced from the wall of said bag, a partition secured to said spaced walls and dividing said pocket into separate compartments, said pocket 'member being formed with separate openings on each side of said partition, and cooperating fastening means secured to said pocket adjacent the edges of said 0 nings.
