The invention relates to an appliance which admits of respiration in an otherwise intolerableatniosphcre laden with smoke, gas and noxious odors.

The invention provides a device of compact form to be readily carried in the pocket so as to be readily at hand. in an emergency to a bait ot a person passing through smoke or other impure atn'ioa-iphore without sul'i'erinp; ill cttects.

The device comprises a casing 1 of approritin'iately pyramidal term and open at opposite ends and adapted to be arranged with the larger end. opposite and in contact with the taco, as shown most clearly in Figure 1,, and with the smaller end facinp; outwardly. In the preferable construc tion. the asing 1 consists of sheet metal which is light and durable. The larger end of the casino; 1 is cut away to obtain a close lit against the taco and the enclosing walls have an inner flange 2 at their outer ends and an inner flange 3 at the inner ends, the flange E2 serving to retain sponge 4, or analogous material within the casing. able material and prevents the same from being drawn into the lungs during respiration when the device is in active operation. The inner marginal portion of the flange 3 is deflected, as shown most clearly in Figures 2 andfl, and the wire screen 5 is at tached to the deflected portion of the flange in any preferred way, as by being soldered thereto. A suitable packing (5, such as felt, is attached to the outer side oil that portion of the flange S destined to make contact with the taco to insure a close lit and obviate injurious pressure. Loops 7 are provided at opposite sides of the casing 1 adja cent the inner end, and receive an elastic 8 or other attaching means provided for holding the device in position upon the face, as indicated most clearly in Figure 1.

The casing is designed to lit against the :Face opposite the mouth and below the nose and in order that the user may breathe through the not, or mouth or both, as required, the top wall of the. casing is: provi ded with openings 9 in position to register with the nostrils upon opposite sides of the septum. To obtain a close fit between the nose of the user and the casino; 1 a cover 10 is provided and this cover envelols the nose andis attached to the top side ot the casing. The cover includes a spring ttranm and flexible material, such as thin leather, sheet rubber, or the lilre. The sprirsr frame consists of a single length of spring wire oi suitable gage bent into the form substarn tially as shown, and comprise v similar side pieces, each en'ibodying an upright 11, an inclined. member 12 and a lower member 13, the side portions of the frame being con-- nected by a curved member M which conforms to the cut away portion oi the inner end of the casing. The inclined members 12 are disposed in close relation to extend along the bridge of the nose and the lower portion 13 curves to conform to the sides of the nose. The lower ends of the uprights 11 pass loosely through openings formed in the top side of the casing adjacent the inner end. and the f ame is oil such construction as to maintain the shape of the cover and insure a close fit thereof about the nose. The lower portion of the covering is deflected outwardly and is confined by a retainer 15 which is soldered or otherwise secured to the top side-of the casing, said retainer 15 consisting of a strip of metal conforming to the outline of the nose, as indicated most clearly in Figure 1.

The sponge 4, or like porous materia is saturated with water, and when the air is drawn therethrough-in the act of respiration, the impurities are eliminated, so that the person enveloped by smoke or other impure air will not suffer ill effects or expe' rien'ce serious inconvenience, so that an emergency may be successfully combated as an escape or rescue'irom a burning building.

2. A smoke protector con'mrising a casing tapering throughout its length and having its larger end cut away to lit close against. the face opposite the mouth and below the nose, a screen at the inner end of the casing,

porous material within the outer portion of the casing and prevented from displacement by said screen, said casing having an opening in its top side to register with the nostrils, a. cover adapted to envelope the nose, a retainer securing the lower portion of the cover to the top side ol the casing, and a spring nose frame within the cover for preserving the shape thereof and consisting of a single wire con'iprising similar side pieces and a lower connecting member curved forwardly between its ends, each of the side pieces comprising an upright at the side of the nose with its lower end passing through the top of the casing, an inclined member adjacent the bridge of the nose, and a lower member curving laterall from the inclined member to conform to a side of the nose and resting upon the top of the casing.
