B. T. DA GGY SURGI CAL APPARATUS Filed July 13, 1927 -2 Sheets-Sheet oil. V
INVENTOR ATTORN EY Patented Aug. 28, 1928.
Ulll'l'l-LD STATES BENJAMIN THOMAS DAGGY, OF RICHMOND, INDIANA.
SURGICAL APPARATUS.
Application filed July 13, 1927. Serial No. 205,462.
This invention relates to surgical apparatus and has for the primary object the provision of means'designed to be worn by females to act as a uterine drain or conductor of fluids from the uterus to a container or receptacle, without permitting the fluids to come in contact with the middle or lower vaginal vault and canal, or tissues, or other internal and external parts.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus of the above character which may be worn with comfort and convenience at menstrual periods, as well as for the purpose of draining the uterine cavity in HS cases of hemorrhage due to cancer, fibroids and other affections of that organ and thereby help prevent infection of the parts external thereto and permit them to be kept in a clean and sanitary condition. a
Another object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus which will support the vaginal vaults and assist in maintaining the normal position of the uterus at times when it is congested and heavy, and thus greatly re- 2 lieve otherwise painful periods of menstruation.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus whichwill support a prolapsed uterus and a prolapsed urinary bladder, while the upper vaginal vault is being drained. 7
.Another object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus which may be easily and quickly taken apart for cleaning, and thereafter readily reassembled, so that itmay be kept in a sanitary condition.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus which in addition to the above and other advantageous features, is made of soft flexible rubber and other suitable materials, with the parts so constructed and arranged that it may be adjusted to any size vaginal vault and worn without discomfort or annoyance and without danger of injury to the wearer.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional View illustrating the invention.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevation partly 1n section illustrating the manner of removably connecting the shield and transforming cup or chamber to the neck of the apparatus.
Figure 4 is a horizontal section taken through the neck of the apparatus just above the point of attachment of the shields.
Figure 5 is an enlarged section on the line 55 of Figure 1.
7 Referring to thedrawings in detail where-- in like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the head portion of .the apparatus which is connected to the body 11 by a neck 16.
The head portion which is designed to be inserted within the upper or inside vaginal cavity is substantially.cylindrical in shape and includes an outer wall 13 which is preferably formed of expansible rubber, and an inner wall 14 which extends through the head and defines a passage through said head. The wall 14 is preferably formed of soft nonexpansible rubber. and is so shaped that the passagedefined thereby tapers from the top to the bottom of the head. The wall 14 is extended so as to provide a neck 15 of the same material. Extending alongthe neck 15 is a tube 16 whose inner end opens into the head, or into anair chamber 17 whose walls are formed by the walls 14 and 13; The outer or opposite end'of this tube 16 isprovided' with a removable closure cap 18 and-the tube provides means whereby the head 10 may be conveniently inflated so as to entirely fill the walls of the vaginal cavity.
Permanently secured to the lower end of the neck 15 is a ring 19 which is formed of suitable material and which is externally threaded. Threadedly and detachably engaging the ring 19 is a ring 20.'which has ex-. tending therefrom'studs or buttons 21. Secured over these studs or buttons 21 are the inner ends of oppositely extending preferably rubber shields 22 Whose outer ends carry rings 23 and provide means whereby the ap-, paratus may be secured to the wearers garment, or to a cord or belt, a portion of which is indicated by the dotted lines at 24 in Fig ure 1 of the drawings. i i
Also attached to the ring 20 over the studs 21 is a container 25 which is divided bya partition- 26 into an upper chamber 27 and a lower chamber 28. This container is provided with a flexible neck portion 29 having openings therein for receiving the studs 21. The par tition 26 is provided with openings 30 so as to Ill) provide communication between the chambers 27 and 28.
Located within the upper chamber 27 is a cup-shaped transforming compartment or chamber 31 which 1s also provided wlth a flexible neck portion indicated at. 32. This.
thus be readily separated for the'purpose of cleaning and=thereafter readily and conveniently reasembled.
The cup-shapedtransforming chamber carries at its upper end a thin flexible diaphragm 32. This diaphragm is preferably formed of rubber and is arranged beneath the lower end of the neck so as to permit of the passage of fluids through the neck into the transforming chamber 31, but will prevent return passage of said fluids. The diaphragm 32'thusin effect forms acheck valve. This diaphragmcarries a screen covered compound of non-coagulan-ts, cleodorants, bleaching chemicals and antiseptics which are pressed or formed into thin blocks and indicated at 33. The block 33 is thus arrangedin the path of fluids passing fromthe neck 15. The action. of the compounds forming theblock is to prevent the blood from coagu lating. and provide ,a deodorant and antiseptic.
The trans orming chamber is provided with openings 34 through which the fluid passes from this chamber into the chamber 27 of thereceptacle 25. Before passing from the transforming chamber 31' however the fluid is further subjected to the actionof another screen covenedcompound formedof the same materials asthe block 33. Thislast referredto screen covered compound is substantially cup-shaped and is indicated at 35. This compound covers the bottom; and extends upward along the :sides of the chamber 31 and acts upon the'fluid within'this chamber to further prevent the blood from coagulating to provideadeodorant and antiseptic. Ad.- ditional pawls or blocks36of the same compound are arranged within the chamber 31 to sterilize the fluids andprevent odors.
, Extending around the upper portion of the chamber 31' is a shield 37. This-shield extends over theopeningsfit and acts to prevent; the walls of the container from; closing'the openings 34: should the container walls become partially deflated.
After the fluid has been acted-upon by the elements33, 85 and 36. it passes out through the openings 34f into the upper chamber27 and through the openings into-the lower chamber 28. A tube 38 has one of its ends suitably secured to the container 25 so as to drain this container. The opposite end of this tube is in communication With a, con-- tainer 39 which is preferably provided with a cover 40. This cover carries straps 41. 'lhecontainer 39 is designed to be attached to the thigh of the wearer and is shaped in conformitytherewith so that it may be conveniently secured in place, or may be secured within a special pocket provided'in one of the garments of the wearer so as not to be noticeable. If desired, the container 39 may be omitted.
"The container 25 is arranged within a flexi ble sack-likecasing 42 whose upperend-s are secured as at 4L3 to the shields 22. In addition, the outer end of the tube 16 is suitably secured to one of the shields 22 as indicated at 44. i y
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form,- proportions and-minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved'to make such changes asyproperly fall within the scope of the-appended claims.
